Gabriel appeared in the motel room, looking angry and dejected.
"Is Castiel here?" Gabriel asked Sam.
"Nope. Him and Dean went out," Sam replied as he eyed the archangel cautiously.
Gabriel sighed and sat on the edge of one of the beds. He rested his head on his hand.
"Figures," he muttered. Sam stepped a bit closer, and he smelled something sweet. That wasn't unusual, given that Gabriel kept up his Trickster act.
Gabriel muttered something into his hands.
"Sorry?" Sam asked.
"Just, don't ask how." Gabriel said. He took a deep breath and the air fizzed a bit. Gabriel's bright, bronze wings appeared. Sam's jaw dropped at how beautiful they were. But there was one small problem.
"Why are there pink and blue spots?" Sam asked as he leaned a little closer. The sweet smell was overwhelming, and Sam was able to identify the smell. A short laugh escaped him.
"Yeah, laugh it up, Yeti," Gabriel shot.
"How did you end up with cotton candy stuck in your wings?" Sam asked.
"Doesn't matter. I can't get it out." Gabriel's head went into his hands once again. "I should have waited for Cas.” Sam tried to stifle the laughter.
"How do you get cotton candy out of wings?" Sam asked. He knelt on the bed, inspecting the feathers. The sugared floss was threaded all through them. Gabriel shrugged.
"Soap and water, I guess," he mumbled.
"Take a shower," Sam suggested.
"If it was that easy, I wouldn't be here!" Gabriel shot.
"Are you asking me to help you?" Sam asked bemusedly. Gabriel wouldn't meet his eyes.
Sam was shocked a he felt sorry for the runaway archangel. Deciding not to torment him further, he grabbed the ice bucket. He filled it with warm water from the bathroom. He added a bit of shampoo to it and carried it back to the bed.
Gabriel stretched his wings a bit further out as Sam settled behind him.
They didn't talk as Sam worked the foamy water over the wings with a face cloth. He wet small patches of feathers, then worked the cotton candy out with his fingers.
The tension eased out of Gabriel's shoulders the longer Sam worked at the feathers. Sam found himself smiling.
"You sure you've never done this before?" Gabriel tossed over his shoulder.
"Never," Sam chuckled.
"You're a fast learner," Gabriel said.
"So I've been told," Sam replied.
By time Sam finished, his hands were covered in bits of color and a little sticky.
Gabriel stood and flapped his wings. He sighed contentedly as they were easier to move.
"Thanks," Gabriel whispered. He leaned over and gave Sam a quick kiss on the lips and disappeared.
Before Sam could call out to him to come back, Dean opened the door. He cocked an eyebrow as he studied what was lying around Sam.
"Let me guess, it's not what it looks like," Dean said with a smirk.
"I don't really know what it even was," Sam replied softly.
