"He's stable enough to move," Dean said. Castiel strapped the unconscious man's legs to the stretcher. They both stood, lifting the stretcher so the legs extended. They were careful as they moved the stretcher quickly to the waiting ambulance.

Castiel pushed from his end and stepped inside. His wings brushed the ceiling before he crouched down and attached a portable heart monitor to the man. Dean crouched down and made his way to the driver's seat. He gave a quick whoop of the siren and backed out of the driveway. He gave it gas and started speeding towards the hospital. He picked up the radio and alerted them they were on their way. Dean mentally kicked himself the entire drive there.

"I do not think he's going to make it," Castiel said from the back.

"Not on my damned watch," Dean muttered and turned the sirens back on.

Their patient survived the trip to the hospital. They rushed him in, telling the doctor and nurses his vitals and what medical attention that he had already received. They assisted the staff in transporting him from their stretcher to the bed.

As Dean and Castiel finished their end of the paperwork, they were given the news. The man didn't make it.

Dean drove the ambulance back to the EMS building down the street from the hospital. After parking it, Dean stormed out of the building. Castiel let dispatch know they were back and did the paperwork.

He knew Dean needed a bit of time.

A half hour later and Dean was still not back in the building. Castiel walked outside. He heard the sound of something hitting metal. Castiel walked to where the EMS workers parked their cars. Dean was kicking one of the metal garbage cans. He was smoking.

"Dean is everything alright," Castiel asked.

"No, nothing is fucking alright," Dean spat as he kicked the can once more. He took one last drag off his cigarette and tossed it onto the ground.

"We did everything we could," Castiel said.

"And it wasn't enough," Dean grumbled. He lit another cigarette. Castiel reached over and picked it out of his mouth.

"Did we figure out what was happening?" Castiel asked. Dean nodded. "Did he survive the trip to the hospital?" Dean nodded again. "Was there something we missed?" Dean shook his head. "Then don't beat yourself up."

"He should have lived. He didn't and it was my fault," Dean said. He began walking away. Castiel grabbed Dean's arm and flapped his wings. He flew them to the roof of the EMS base.

"I thought you couldn't fly," Dean said in shock. Castiel sat at the edge of the roof, his feet dangling down. Dean sat next to him.

"I can only fly short distances. The injury I sustained to my wing only allows me to do brief flights."

Dean took the pack of cigarettes. He handed one to the angel, knowing he smoked occasionally. Castiel took it with a nod. Dean lit his and kept the flame going from his lighter for Castiel.

"I let him down," Dean mumbled. "Him and his family." Dean rested his elbows on his knees, staring at the ground.

"You need to let it go," Castiel said quietly. Dean nodded. They smoked in silence for a few minutes.

"How do you deal with it?" Dean asked. Castiel shrugged and stretched his wings.

"I think about why I became a paramedic," Castiel said. "I think about the two people who reacted fast enough to save my wings."

Dean wanted to know what had happened, but knew better to ask.

"My family didn't take well to my career choice, but that didn't matter. 'Angels only become doctors' my brother constantly reminds me." Castiel gave a brief and bitter laugh. "But when things like this happen, I always think about all the lives I've saved, all the people I helped. And that makes nights like this easier."

Dean nodded and sat back. He bumped Castiel's wing. Castiel did not move it.

They sat in silence for another minute.

"Did you want to come to a barbeque with me tomorrow?" Dean blurted. Castiel tilted his head and smiled.

"I would enjoy that. Yes, I will come."

Castiel carried the large bowl of cucumber salad towards the house.

"I told you, you didn't have to bring anything," Dean said as he led the angel around the side of the house. He opened the gate to the backyard.

"I am a guest, I should bring something." Dean held up a bottle of wine. Castiel shook his head and followed Dean into his brother's backyard.

"Uncle Dean!" A child shrieked. Dean smiled as a small girl ran to him. He picked her up in a hug. He spun her around in his arms a few times before placing her back on the ground. The smile on her face changed to a look of awe when she saw Castiel behind him.

"Who's that?" She asked quietly. Castiel stepped forward. He handed the bowl to Dean and crouched on the ground in front of her.

"My name is Castiel." He said as he held his hand out to her. She took it gently and shook. "And your name is Hannah." Her eyes widened.

"How did you know that?" She asked, still holding Castiel's hand.

"Because I do." He said with a smirk. "You're five years old, you like to sing, and you're very smart in school."

Hannah stared at Dean in amazement. Dean smirked at her.

"I've got to tell Mommy," she said and bolted back to the sliding door. Dean handed back the bowl.

"Didn't think you paid attention when I drone on about my family," Dean said with a smile. Castiel was about to reply when the rest of the family came out of the house. Castiel smiled as he looked over their faces. He had never seen a picture of them, but Dean had described them all perfectly.

Sam was the tallest one, with shaggy hair and a childlike smile, and Dean's brother. His wife Jessica was short, beautiful, long blonde hair and very pregnant. Dean introduced them to Castiel. They seemed surprised that Castiel was there, but welcomed him warmly, as if he was already a family member.

Bobby came next. He was older, looked a little time worn and seemed cynical. As Castiel shook his hand, he knew that Bobby was a better father to Dean and Sam than their biological one ever was.

Dean led Castiel into the house to put the salad in the fridge. Any normal man would have cracked under the appraising stares of the people inside.

Ash was a childhood friend, and would be on the list of Top 20 minds of this century, if he cared about it. Judging by his laid back attitude, he didn't.

Ellen could make a weak man fall in agony just from her stare. Castiel smiled softly as he approached her. He knew this woman had looked after Dean and Sam as if they were her own children when their parents died. Her daughter Jo wasn't as intimidating, but Castiel could tell she was a feisty one, and could probably beat Dean in arm-wrestling.

Castiel turned to face the last person in the room, Missouri. Instead of extending her hand for Castiel to shake, she hugged him. Castiel looked at the older clairvoyant with question in his eyes. Her dark skinned hands came up and held his face. She smiled and nodded at him before releasing him.

Dean chuckled and handed Castiel a beer. Dean and Ash went out to the barbeque. As Castiel tried to follow, Jess blocked his exit. She pointed into the kitchen with a serious look on her face.

"You're an angel," Jo started. Castiel sighed and drank half of the beer before taking a seat.

"Yes, I am," Castiel replied calmly. The four women leaned closer to the table, but didn't sit.

"How did you meet?" Jess asked while rubbing her stomach.

"We work together. We've been paired up for the last three months."

"And how do you find working with Dean?" Ellen asked, crossing her arms across her chest.

"He's dedicated, smart, and knows his job. I cannot say I've worked with anyone better."

"How do you feel about him?" Jo asked. Castiel drew a deep breath.

"I like him very much. He is a good hearted man, and he can be a lot of fun to spend time with."

"How long has this been going on?" Ellen asked. Castiel tilted his head in confusion.

"Dean and I are not in a romantic relationship, if that is what you mean."

"Dean never brings anyone to our gatherings," Missouri said softly. "Not even that piece of filth he was dating for two years."

"He asked me, I accepted," Castiel said cautiously. "I was not aware that this would be an odd occurrence."

"Are you interested in Dean that way?" Ellen asked.

"Yes, but he hasn't shown any signs of being interested in me." Castiel gave a short laugh. "Until I found out that he's never brought a guest to a family gathering."

"Be good to him," Jess said as she sat down beside Castiel. "He's not as thick skinned as he makes himself out to be." Castiel smiled

"I already knew that."

The other three women sat with Castiel and began to talk.

"Dude, your angel might not make it out of there alive," Ash said as he opened another beer. Dean looked over his shoulder a he was placing the burgers on the grill.

"What?" He asked. Sam handed him the tongs.

"I didn't think you were that much of an idjit," Bobby grumbled as he tossed the tennis ball for Bones. Sam smiled as he watched his daughter chase after the dog.

"Can you please tell me what they are going on about?" Dean asked his younger brother. Sam laughed.

"First time you've ever brought someone to a family barbeque, and you wonder what's going on," Sam said as he nudged Dean away from the grill.

Dean leaned against the railing and took a drink of his beer.

"This is not the first time I've brought someone," Dean said. His eyebrows came together in thought. Bobby and Ash shook their heads and looked away.

The door to the house opened and Castiel stepped out onto the porch. He was smiling.

"The ladies would like to talk to you, Dean," Castiel said. He sat down in a plastic patio chair across from Bobby and Ash. Dean shrugged and stepped inside.

Once in the kitchen, he really wished he had stayed outside.

All four of them had their arms crossed and eyebrows raised.

"What did or didn't I do this time?" He asked as he sat in a chair.

"Two years," Missouri started. "You were with Victor for two whole years, and you never brought him to a family dinner."

"It's over with Victor, and I'm pretty sure that you all hated him."

"Not the point," Jess said, sitting down opposite Dean. "He made you happy, and you never brought him."

"Why are you caring about my ex now?"

All four women smiled at him. Dean preferred when he thought they were going to disembowel him.

"You never mentioned Castiel to us," Jo said, moving her hands to her hips.

"And you never hinted that you were in a relationship," Ellen added.

"Or that he was an angel," offered Missouri.

Dean threw his hands up.

"He's a co-worker of mine! So what! He seemed lonely, and doesn't have much of a family left, so I brought him," Dean almost shouted. "And if this is what I get to go through every time I invite someone, I won't do it anymore."

Jess' hand slid across the table and covered Dean's.

"We like him," she said.

"We want you to be happy," Ellen added.

"But I'm not in a relationship with Cas," Dean said. He turned pleading eyes to Missouri. She smiled and nodded.

"We know. But you better treat that boy right, or I won't feed you again." she threatened.

Then it finally hit him.

Maybe he really did like Cas a little more than he thought.

"Glad to see you survived," Bobby said, handing Castiel another beer.

"Are they normally like this?" Castiel asked.

"They're behaving today," Ash offered as he tossed the tennis ball for Bones again.

"Is this the point where you tell me if I break his heart, they'll never find my body?"

"Glad we had this talk, son," Bobby said.

Hannah came scrambling up to the porch and stood in front of Castiel.

"You have wings," she said.

"I do." The wings fluttered a bit.

"So you can fly," she said. A devious smirk spread across her face.

"I do not fly very well, but yes. I can."

"Are your wings broken?" She asked.

"Hannah!" Sam hissed.

"They did break, a long time ago. It hurts when I fly for a long time,” Castiel said. He looked over to Sam, who looked mortified. "Her questions don't bother me. She has obviously never met another angel."

"I met an angel at the hospital," she said proudly. "She was a doctor, and she fixed my finger." Hannah held up her pinky finger. it had a tiny white scar. "I didn't even cry when I got the stitches." Castiel smiled at the girl.

"Sam, do you mind if Hannah comes flying with me?" Castiel asked.

"Sure, if she wants," Sam said, putting his beer down.

Before Hannah could say anything else, Castiel picked her up and flew straight up in the air. Hannah squealed with delight as he did one loop before landing on the grass. Bones started barking at them. Castiel rested for two heartbeats, then took off again.

He noticed Dean coming out of the door, bringing out the other food. Dean's face was that of shock, watching the angel and his niece. Castiel landed back on the porch.

"I have to let my wings rest," Castiel said to Hannah. He took the bowl from Dean's hand. "Your family is a lot of fun."

Dean was amazed at how well Castiel fit into this ragtag version of a family. He thought about what the women were talking about.

None of his other boyfriends would have appreciated a night like this. Yes, they had met them all, but never the calm chaos of all of them in one place. Castiel never seemed to fit into many places, but he did here.

Dean reached under the table and wound his fingers through Castiel's. The angel didn't flinch. He squeezed back and smiled, continuing his discussion with Ash about new medical advances.

Dean stopped his Impala in front of Castiel's building.

"Did you have fun?" Dean asked. Castiel gave him a blinding smile.

"Yes, thank you for inviting me."

"I'm sorry if they seemed weird or freaked you out," Dean started.

"They are all lovely people, Dean," Castiel said as he turned to face him. "You have a great family."

Dean smiled and stared at the blue eyed angel. without a second thought, he leaned forward and gave him a soft kiss. Castiel kissed back, linking their hands together again.

"Did you want to come over for dinner sometime?" Castiel asked in between kisses.

"Yes, I would like that," Dean replied.
