Springtime Anime Update

Jun 04, 2008 10:03

I used to do these all the time, but throughout most of the winter my anime-viewing has been pretty much on the low-count side.  However, lately I've been spending a decent amount of time watching a few different series, so this becomes an appropriate time to discuss the subject.

Currently Viewing via Fansub:

To-LoveRu ~ Trouble (episodes seen = 6)... not the best series I've ever seen, but it's good fun, has lots of ecchi, and Lala-sama is just the cutest thing to come out this season.

Vampire Knight (episodes seen = 2)... a little something different from what I'm used to, and though this isn't the first vampire series I've actually seen (Karin and Tsukiyomi Moon Phase), this is the most serious of the genre.

Wagaya nI Oinarisama (episodes seen = 2)... reminds me of Inukami, though I know it will never be as good.  It's interesting enough to keep my interest for a bit.  I need to see more episodes before I can really decide.  The best part of the show so far is the shrine maiden who tags along; I forget her name... but she's so adorable.

Rebirth of Evangelion (episodes seen = 1)... it's both cool and disappointing at the same time that the revamped edition is more or less exactly the same as the original story, but at least with the modern technology, we get a more powerful mode of presentation.  The animation design is a small step up from the remastered Platinum edition, but the sound... man... now that is some good effects!!  The only trouble I'm having is getting used to the Japanese since I know and love the original by the English voices.

Currently Viewing via DVD:

Kanon 2006 (volumes seen = 3 out of 6)... I'm halfway through the Mai-arc!!!  Mai is so interesting, I'm dying to find out what happens to her after the dance fiasco, but I want to wait until I have a distraction-free night so I can really focus on it.

Welcome to the NHK (volumes seen = 4 out of 6)... another good series that I didn't think I'd like so much, but ended up becoming enthralled with.  I thought things were gonna change after Saki's confession, but Sato is so thick that it didn't even register.  Oh well, this series in my mind is the third of the unofficial Comic Party (doujinshi)/Genshiken (anime)-trilogy.

Simoun (volumes seen = 2 out of 5)... I can't say I avidly seek out yuri, but I don't exactly shy away from them either.  Moot point anyway since even though this is purported as a big "yuri" title, there hasn't been anything beyond a few girl-girl pecks on the lips/cheeks and girl-girl dramuz!  Oh well, I'm just watching cause the story flows so evenly... and it's a Media Blasters title, so each DVD is wicked cheap.  SUPPORT CHEAP (LEGIT) ANIME!!

Venus Versus Virus (volumes seen = 2 out of 3)... girls with guns, always an awesome combo.  I really need to finish this one up, especially now that Lucia's past has been revealed.  The story is kinda wayward, which is why I've kinda been putting it off, but I have all the volumes and hate leaving series unfinished, so I'll get to it soon.

The Third: The Girl with the Blue Eye (volumes seen = 4 out of 6)... I randomly marathoned volumes 3 and 4 on back-to-back nights, but then I kinda let me interest sway.  The final arc is about to begin with Haruko about to finally take on the Third organization, but I'd rather wait until I have volume 6 so I can finish it up in one gulp.

Vexille (single movie)... the trailer that I first saw at an anime convention looked incredible.  The months-long wait I endured to finally see this was excruciating.  Too bad the hype I built up for myself wasn't enough to match what the movie had to deliver.  The art was beyond stunning, however that was the only positive thing about this movie.  The characters were weak, the story was unsatisfying, and the music (which had been heavily pointed out that was done by Paul Oakenfold) was a letdown.  If you haven't bought this yet, I'd say go with Appleseed Ex Machina instead.

Chobits (randomly rewatching)... I was collecting screencaps for Anime-Source.com's Favorite Opening Survey and "Let Me Be with You" by ROUNDTABLE was one of the songs I had to scoop up.  Well, that 1 minute and 31 seconds I spent with the series had me hankering for more old-skool (well, as old-skool as you want to consider 2004) anime, so I grabbed volume 1 off the shelf... but this time I watched it in Japanese (this was one of the first anime I ever watched and when I did originally, I watched it in English)... so yeah, all I can say... OMGKAWAII!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  No wonder I fell in love with anime... Chi is just beyond adorable.  "Chiiiiii"  "Hideki!"  "Hideki!" "Hideki!"  LOLZ
