Lucky Lyrics Channel - Episode 02

A-hello Lucky!! It's time for another breakdown of some more of that anime poetry... those beautiful, thoughtful lyrics that complement the enchanting melodies of opening and closing theme. The song choice this round is one of the most beautiful songs ever written: "Tori no Uta/Shi" or "Bird's Song/Poem," the Air TV OP performed by Lia.

>>We watched the fading vapor trails
>>They were so dazzling, I ran away - I was always weak
>>I let go, frustrated by the fact
>>That I couldn't stay unchanged since that day
>>Couldn't stay unchanged forever

The show itself discusses the sky and air a lot. It also talks about dreaming and living inside a dream, so expect to see a lot of words pretaining to those images.

>>That bird still can't fly well
>>But someday she will know the feeling of cutting through the wind
>>The place she can't reach is still there in the distance
>>She gazes at it, keeping her wish to herself

The show also has themes of never giving up, always striving to become better. The last part, "keeping her wish to herself," pretains to the show's lead female character, Misuzu, a young girl with many trouble in life, but doesn't want to burden others with them.

>>Children walk along the summer railway tracks
>>Exposing their bare feet to the blowing wind
>>We place in the distance the days of our childhood
>>We place in our hands hope that springs forth

Oddly enough, during this verse, the show's male lead is walking down a weed-infested railroad. Though he's quite mature and independant, he's still a child. Are the days of childhood really off in the distance? Seems like we're all growing up a little too fast.

>>Chasing, chasing the fading vapor trails
>>It hasn't changed since the day we crossed that hill, and never will
>>So that we will always have it,
>>We'll guard the strength of a sea god, surely

I'm guessing this is saying that hope never fades away, as long as we believe in it.

>>The blades of the windmill that turn in the sky
>>Always have the same dream
>>The dream of a bird, her wish kept to herself,
>>Gazing at the place she can't reach

More talk about air and dreams.

>>I look back: the sun-baked railway tracks are hidden
>>By stormclouds- even if they change their shape,
>>May we always remember
>>The yesterdays left behind by the seasons...

Even when times are bad, our memories are always with us. And interesting is the last line... one of this anime's most romantic elements is the way it describes the passing of a thousand years as "The 1,000th Summer." Seasons are very important to the air, and to our dreams.

>>Chasing, chasing the fading vapor trails
>>The signal is given too early- we start laughing
>>So that we can always look straight ahead,
>>Even if it's slippery with sweat, I won't let go of your hand, ever

More summery images, but now with a happier tone as friendship is blossoming.

>>We watched the fading vapor trails
>>They were so dazzling, I ran away- I was always weak
>>I let go, frustrated by the fact
>>That I couldn't stay unchanged since that day
>>Couldn't stay unchanged forever

Just thinking about these lyrics makes me picture a vast sky and makes us realize how tiny we are. The elements of nature and of the world are so immense, so powerful, that it's inevitable that we will all change at same point. Whether that's a good or bad thing, only time will tell.
