Buffy held the blue ribbon gently.  It was silk and had been Dawn’s favorite color; that is why their mother had bought it for her. As she laced it through her hair she wondered if Dawn had worn it to her funeral as she had to their mother’s funeral.

Buffy sat on the couch in a daze with little Dawnie.  This wasn’t happening!  Daddy wouldn’t really leave, would he?  He couldn’t though, he was daddy!

He is supposed to be there, always.  Had she messed up?  Had Dawn?  Was it their fault?  Was it hers?

Buffy listened while Dawn stumbled over her words.  Dawn realized that her mother had known for a long time Spike was her father.

Explanation

It seemed like the longest hour in the world to Buffy as Illyria explained how her daughter had been reduced to her essence, what the humans knew as the Key.

During this time Illyria had also explained that once reunited with her mother Key, or Dawn as she was now known, would remember her past and how to access her power.
