NINE INCH NAILS
Yup. Best concert I've ever been to. And good, because I'm not planning on going to any more shows for a long, long time.
Got to the DCU Center around 6pm, half an hour before doors open. When we got inside, we were relatively close to the stage. There were these ridiculously obnoxious 14 year olds behind me who WOULDNT SHUT THE FUCK UP. And then on the other side of Meridith was this mother-daughter team. The daughter kept tapping everyone's shoulder saying, "EXCUSE ME! EXCUSE ME I CAN'T SEE.. PLEASE MOVE.. MOVE PLEASE I WAS HERE FIRST" aaaannd that was ridiculous too. There were some pretty goddamn ridiculous people in the audience.
The opening band.. DeerHunter.. was pretty much the worst opening band I've EVER seen live. People were actually booing. It was some tall, lanky dork in a sweater moaning into the mic. And a questionably female guitarist who DIDN'T MOVE the entire performance. It was god awful. They weren't a bad band... just NOT fucking good for opening Nine Inch Nails. When I think about the fact that last year in Europe, LADYTRON opened for NIN... I cry a tear to myself. That would've been muuuccchhh better.
Then everyone's beloved came onstage. Ok, so I was the sixth person back from the barricade. When they came onstage.. of course you expect to be crushed together. BUT JESUS CHRIST is was awful!! My bag was being pulled one way, my body the other.. so I was basically choking while staring into NIN's seizure inducing lights, all while being punched and kicked and pushed around and squished. The man behind me kept trying to kick my legs from under me, so I had to kick back. Anyway, so I went from 6th back to being basically 2nd row for the entire show, that's how squished. It was fantastic. It was scary though.. in the beginning I wanted to cry and move back, but I sucked it up. We were almost dead center, right in front of Trent.
They played mostly new songs from "With Teeth," "Year Zero" and "The Slip." Which I suppose is good, because they're the albums I know best.. but there were some heavier, older songs I would have enjoyed too. Also, I thought I knew most NIN music.. but apparently I don't because I found myself unable to sing along to a lot of songs. I think that even though I've listened to them a thousand times, I still have yet to pick up on the lyrics. There was even one song I hadn't heard before, so it must be from the one album I don't have. During "Reptile," Peter Murphy, lead singer of Bauhaus, came out and sang.
Set List (for the most part) in order. I know I'm missing a few songs.

They came on right at 9pm and ended right at 11pm. TWO FUCKING HOURS!
I'm sad I didn't get to see "Me, I'm Not", "Right Where It Belongs" or "Beside You In Time.'
Oh my god the STAGE. The lights were fucking amazing. The stage was amazing. The setup was crazy. They had these huge, touch/air sensitive screens that came down to the stage, where if someone got close to it, the lights would disappear and you could see through. So Trent would run up and down beside it and the whole screen would change. The visuals were fucking ammaaazzziinnggg. During "The Great Destroyer" I nearly fucking died. I just remember the night years ago that Karyn and I were driving really late through the city and this song came on the radio, and I so badly just wanted to fly off this planet in a space ship. And the visuals and sound to this song live just.. ugh, were perfect. Trent was using some crazy machine that he controlled with his fingers to make all the sounds, and it looked super fun to play with.
For most of the show, I basically just stood there. I couldn't dance and I couldn't move. I kinda wish I could've been far away so I could get the full effect of the visuals and so I could've danced... but I totally don't mind being 5 feet away from Trent Reznor. He is one crazy performer. He was sweating since song 1. ROD, TELL ME WHAT HIS PERSONALITY'S LIKE!!
This dumb fuckin bitch infront of me on the barricade kept putting her ar up at one point to take pictures. SO I put my arm on the barricade. I wasn't trying to steal her spot, and I wasn't taking up all her room. Once she saw me put my arm down, she started elbowing my arm to push me off, and her drunk skanky little friend kept trying to push me away. So I tried with all my might to keep my hand on the railing, before she turned around and said, "Could you PLEASE move your arm?" and this made me sooo freaking angry and irritated that I screamed back, "I DON'T HAVE ANY FUCKING ROOM, I CAN'T MOVE" and she just turned away and didn't say anything back. Her drunk little friend was like, "Woah.." and laughed. Also, whenever I would lean on her, she would arch her back and push me off.. AS IF I HAD ANYWHERE ELSE TO GO!!! Oh my god, it gets me so angry just thinking about it. I wanted to punch her fucking face.
Anyway, it was just nuts. Totally worth the money. And I must see them live again, however long away that may be.
- MY CAMERA IS BROKEN. When lights shine into the lense, weird white spots show that look like rain. Or if I zoom in, weird white vertical fuzzy lines show in the picture. So, a lot of great pictures are ruined.
Our beautiful smiles.
Opening band lawl
Picture stolen off the boards. Thank you whoever it belongs to. I was where the arrow is :)
This was completely flat! That's all lights!
Harry and I.. and some dude.
The beautiful, beautiful people behind us.
Haha yeah, I totally photoshopped these two pictures together.
- I didn't realize if I zoomed in BEFORE I start recording, the videos came out much clearer. So, the only one that's clear is "Reptile." The sound gets screwy in some songs too. I have no idea why.
Yeeeaah... I filmed almost an hours worth of video
1,000,000 Hear that "woooaAAAHhhhAH!!" ?? Yeah, that's me responding to hundreds of people crushing me.
Discipline March of the Pigs Head Down CLOSER The Warning THE GREAT DESTROYER This is like, the most defining moment of my life. The end of this song is just.. pure bliss to me. And the visuals just KILL ME. Starting at 1:48 is.. ugh.
