Movie reviews... because I can

I saw about 3 1/4 movies over the span of this past weekend. Wanna hear about 'em? Here it goes, from order of least liked to most liked.

Southland Tales: I had rather high hopes for this one, as it was made by the same folks who did Donnie Darko. I could only watch about 40 minutes of this crap. This was another one of those rare movies I couldn't finish. I *wanted* to understand the film, but... it was just so boring. The movie couldn't find its focus in the 40 minutes I gave it. I understand the movie is supposed to be a sort of tongue-in-cheek comedy with sci-fi elements, but I didn't laugh once. No wonder the movie didn't make it to theaters, despite a well-known ensemble cast. Skip it.

Another movie that I may have just not "gotten" is the widely acclaimed No Country for Old Men. This film won the Oscar for Best Picture, among others, and damn near everyone I've talked to seems to love the movie.

I didn't.

Maybe it was overhyped for me, but I found the movie to be ploddingly slow and not really all that original. Javier Bardem, who played the assassin Chigurh, certainly deserved his Best Supporting Actor award... he was menacing and oozed "danger" on the screen. I think he was the lone bright spot in that movie. Overall, it was a decent film, but I really don't think it was as good as all the critics are saying. I fully admit that I may have missed something, but my opinion stands: It was an average movie.

I liked Juno. What can I say? I enjoyed the dialogue, especially. Yes, teens don't talk like that. No, I don't care. It's a movie, and I thought the dialogue was cleverly written. The music *did* suck, though. Yeesh, very grating. Juno's definitely worth a rental (though I could do without the Sunny D product placement).

I loved Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Once again, Judd Apatow produces a friggin' hilarious comedy. I laughed through pretty much the whole thing. Becky and I caught this on Saturday night, and while I dreaded a theater full of jabbering assholes, I was pleased to see that there were no teeny boppers; best of all the crowd was into the movie and everyone was having a good time. Best theater experience I've had in a long, long time.

Back to the movie, I don't think there was any part I truly disliked, with the possible exception of the man chicken we had to see several times throughout the movie. Even then, it was played for laughs, so no big deal. I'm glad I saw it, and I'm probably gonna get it on blu-ray later this year, because I know this will be one of those movies I'll pop in when I need cheering up. Go see it!

Other quick news: The cat we had to give up to the Humane Society, Gigi, got adopted yesterday, so we're happy about that. That little cat is the most loving creature, I swear. She deserves to have a happy home. I just wish our other female cat wouldn't have hated Gigi so much...
