SUBWAY RAAAAAGE!

Jun 16, 2009 12:01

Please note that nothing in here is an exaggeration. This person really exists, and really either needs a hug or needs to be fired.

Last night at around 11:30, Zach really really wanted some Subway. It's right down the street, so I went there thinking that they don't close until 1 or 2am for some reason. I get there and there are two people in line ahead of me. They order their sandwiches and I'm next. I'm greeted at the counter by the most angry, hateful-looking girl I have ever seen. She sighs and says, "What do you want?" Literally. I told her, and while she was making my sandwiches, she turns to her co-worker and says "Can you believe that stupid girl earlier? She asked me if we close at 2, and I told her 'no, we close at 12!'" at which point she shot me a look. Let me be clear. I thought they closed at 2 for some reason as well. I also know that by that time, it was no later than 11:45. While she was adding vegetables to my sandwiches, I spoke semi-slowly to make sure I wasn't leaving her behind. She snapped at me the entire time! "Next!" "What else?!" "Go!" "Speed up!" Who does that?! In any case, I always make it a point to be super nice to people working in the food industry, so I said all my pleases and thankyous, got my sandwiches made, and moved to the cash register to pay.

Zach wanted two bags of chips to himself, and I wanted one, so I had two bigass sandwiches and three bags of chips. A single Subway bag will not hold all of that. I planned on asking for an extra bag after I was finished paying. Wrong. As soon as the cash register closed, the girl shot me a nasty look, whipped around the counter, and walked to the door. The entire time I was getting my drinks and fumbling with the three bags of chips, she was standing at the door, glaring at me and tapping her foot. Literally tapping her foot. Seriously. While this was going on, her co-worker was doing all of the standard closing procedures...sweeping, mopping, etc. You know, doing all the work. As I was leaving, I actually apologized for keeping them, even though it was still probably 5 or 10 minutes til midnight, when I assume they close. I had not even gotten completely through the door before the girl starts closing it on me. I've never had a bad experience with employees at Subway until now.

One of my best friends used to work at Subway, and while she claimed that it was a horrible place (and sometimes I could see that), I've certainly had worse jobs. Sitting with her for hours on end keeping her company on those lonely shifts gave me a little insight about the nature of Subway work, and the girl I encountered last night was way out of line. I understand the anger that comes from a customer walking in five minutes before closing time, I really do. It sucks. However, as many times as people have done that to me, I was never that blatantly rude and unpleasant. Also, had there been other customers behind me, the girl would have had time to make at least two more sandwiches before the clock struck midnight and she turned into a pumpkin. Placed in the same situation, I would have waited til the customer was out of the parking lot, and I probably would have thrown some salami at something and raged until I felt better, but I would never act that way in front of the customer.

I told Zach about the whole incident, and he was able to describe the girl perfectly. Dark circles under her eyes, limp, greasy dishwater blonde hair...Actually, she looked exactly like a girl I used to work with at the theater we called "Dungeons & Dragons." Anyway, my point here is that the girl is not only rude when people walk in in the middle of the night, she has been rude to other people on various occassions. I had planned on registering a complaint with Subway in the belief that something seriously needs to be said to her. I don't want to get her fired, as I know how difficult it can be to make it, but I think people like that really need to have the fear of a higher power put in them. They need to know that they are replaceable, and that there are plenty of people who would love to have a job right now, who are more than willing to remain positive and kind to customers. Does this make me a bad person? I'm having serious doubts now about complaining about her because I don't want to be that person, but it's been bothering me since the encounter last night. She shouldn't be allowed to act like that. How does she speak to her managers? Anyway, I kind of just wanted some advice. I expect disgruntled fast food employees to a degree, but this one made me feel especially bad for having been hungry.

Also, I can't find any way to file complaints through Subway's website. Wtf.
