It is going to be pretty damn cold here in CLT too this weekend. I already put freeze boxes on the water spigots, flushed the sprinkler system and drained all the hoses.

You really are a much better homeowner than us.

I never do stuff like that and really should.

The spigot covers are like $3 at HD or Lowes and save you the cost of replacing busted spigots or pipes.

To drain the hose, just leave one end on the ground and hte other propped up in the air, gravity will do the rest.

For the sprinkler flush you need an aircompressor, or have to pay someone to do it. (Sean has a compressor I am sure) This is the most work, but will save you the most if you have a sprinkler system. You only need to do this if the weather is going to be below freezing for more than 2 nights in a row.

Maybe I'll go pick up some of teh spigot covers today while I'm out.

The hoses are in boxes, so do I really need to drain them?

And thank goodness we don't have a sprinkler system so I don't need to worry about that.

Hose boxes are probably good enough. Our 3 hoses are on exposed reals, or one of those hanger things you attach to the house.

That explains why I've never heard about draining them. I loved the idea of the hose boxes, but now that we've had them for a few years, I really don't like them much. I would much rather have a nice decorative iron hose reel attached to the house. But that's hard with the hose right out front, and if we did that out back Bishop would eat the hose. So we'll just consider it protection. :)

Hose Boxes SUCK. They are a bitch to wind/unwind and ours always gets jammed every 5-6 turns of the crank. We have a nice cast iron hose hanger in front/side of the house.

So you decided to keep Bishop? I seem to remember rumors that you were looking for a home for Bishop.

Have you trained the rats to ride on the dogs heads yet? That would be WAY cool. Think I saw that in a movie once.

I'm still not sure what we are going to do about Bishop. He's a big pain in the ass, but I know from the way that he acts that it's ALL related to me going to work and not being home as much.

No way we can train the rats to ride on the dogs heads. The dogs would eat them like those tiny little bones at PetSmart.

I grew up in Maine, nobody I knew EVER did that stuff even though we were frozen 4-5 months out of the year. Those kinds of problmes aren't as common as people might think, so don't feel bad.

And now I've jinxed myself to burst pipes this weekend :)

I figured it had to be you, you're the only person on my flist who grew up in Maine that I know of. :D

We never had those issues living in upstate New York either, and I rarely do anything down here even in ice storms or anything like that. I just might leave the faucets dripping tonight. This will be the first time we've had weather this cold since moving into this house and I'm not too sure how it will take it.
