An Arctic blast due on Thursday will send metro Atlanta temperatures plummeting to the coldest levels in nearly two years.

Overnight lows in the teens are forecast for the metro area Thursday and Friday nights, the National Weather Service said.

The last time Atlanta recorded lows below 20 degrees was on Jan. 24, 2005, when the mercury hit 16. Last winter's coldest reading was 24 degrees, on Dec. 22 and again on Feb. 13.

Forecasters said a dry cold front will push across Georgia on Thursday, with the Arctic air mass in its wake.

"Expect a cold, blustery Thursday afternoon as temperatures begin to fall," the Weather Service said. "Wind chills by late Thursday afternoon and early evening will dip into the low 20s."

Thursday night, winds of 10 to 20 mph will make temperatures around 18 degrees feel like 2 to 6 degrees.

The forecast for metro Atlanta calls for partly cloudy skies and lows in the low 30s tonight, followed by mostly sunny conditions and highs in the low 50s ahead of the front on Thursday.

Thursday night will be mostly clear, windy and cold, with lows in the upper teens.

Friday will be sunny, with afternoon highs in the upper 40s. Friday night, lows will be around 16 degrees, the Weather Service said.

The outlook for the weekend calls for sunny skies Saturday and Sunday, with highs each day in the upper 50s and lows Saturday night in the low 20s.
