"If I were Kate I'd be very careful now about approaching him, since he's obviously got no frakking brains. You don't head BACK to the ex-wife 'cause you can't get the girl you want. Really?"

Exactly. While I don't think it's wrong for him to feel the need to let go and give her space if she's with CylonBoy, the way he did it was so insulting and hurtful. Even more so because of it being GINA. Gina, who he's expressed multiple times of thinking of her being a ball busting harpy. Hooking up with her of all people because Kate's not available? It shows poor judgment. It also shows Kate when he feels insecure, he falls back into hold, bad habits and seeks attention elsewhere. That's not a good trait, and it's not something you want to open your heart up to.

Also I'd believe it if he fell back into bed with Meredith, because she's more like junk food therapy; a good thing he only has once in awhile. They still had a spark when she was in NYC, and although he didn't want her around all the time, he clearly still enjoyed spending time with her. Or hell, even Ellie would make more sense. However Gina was Mrs. SexlessMarriage, so I can't buy it.

If they would have let him go off alone, I would have loved it.

But Gina, about whom he's never had a good word to say, who he ws avoiding and who was an absolute bitch to him in the pilot episode? Suddenly they're such good BFFs that he's going to spend the whole summer with her at the Hamptons?

It makes Castle look immature and needy and shallow that he would take Gina rather than be alone. And having her pick him up at the station to show Beckett that he's doing just fine without her was nasty.

Meredith would have made sense becasue they've reached a good relationship. Ellie would have made sense because they had fun sex. Even Paula, his agent, would have made sense because they get on too. But Gina who he doesn't care for and who treats him like he's mentally deficient, makes him look all kinds of immature and desperate.

The problem is, it's going to affect the whole show because it affect the core Castle/Beckett relationship. Even if they work things out, the banter won't be as fun. Beckett has been shown to be so much more mature and brave than Castle, they're no longer equals. He can't grow up enough to match her.
