I haven't done an update on here in a while, mainly because our situation hasn't changed, but I have gotten a lot of packing-related stuff done. All of our VHS tapes and DVDs are packed up, and most of our books. We went through a whole heap of stuff and threw a lot of things out... we took 3 garbage bags full of old clothes to the Community Living box, sorted papers and generated a foot-and-a-half-high stack for recycling, threw out two garbage bags full of various odds and ends that we wanted to get rid of, gave a bunch of stuff to Alina's sister and my brother, sorted our LARP props and threw some things out (the rest is all packed up now) and took a HUGE box of books over to 8th St. Books and Comics. We got 44 dollars in cash and another 80 dollars in trade for them, which was pretty awesome! We picked up a handful of used hardcovers in perfect condition that we've been meaning to read for years, and then took the leftover books (the ones they didn't want) and donated them to the McNally Robinson book sale, which raises money for charity.
I've also sorted through my gaming stuff and generated a box full of things we don't want, which K and C are going to take off our hands (Caitilin has been selling similar stuff on Ebay recently, and offered to get rid of our stuff the same way, although I'm sure Kurt will keep some of it for himself). We still have to go through our old comics, our filing cabinet papers, Alina's art supplies, our old towels and my random kitchen stuff... after that, most everything we're getting rid of will be gone. This is what happens when you live in one city for a very long time; you accumulate a lot of crap! We're also getting rid of Alina's old white bookcase just because it's too damned awkward to move (we're better off buying a new one at Ikea when we get there), and our crappy glass dining table that came from a garage sale for 5 dollars, but we're going to keep the rest of the furniture.
We still don't have a place lined up... all of the rental people I've talked to so far have said that they won't know about openings until this coming Tuesday. So, my plan for tomorrow is to get up and start phoning at 8:30 Alberta time and keep phoning until I find something acceptable. We'll probably take something sight-unseen for now, without a lease, and move again later if we don't like it... the main issue at the moment is just to have SOMETHING. Keep your fingers crossed that it goes well for me tomorrow!
At the moment, the plan is this: Alina finishes work on the 20th (or very shortly thereafter), so during the following week we're going to get the majority of our stuff packed and ready to go. Then we'll drive down to Regina for a visit with our families for a couple days, where we'll temporarily swap our car for Alina's mom's SUV. We'll drive back up by Saturday the 28th (when I'm running the Inheritance game), and spend Sunday the 29th cleaning, packing the last few things and partially loading the SUV. We will then pick up the U-haul trailer on Monday the 30th, load up all of our stuff that we can, and spend our last night in Saskatoon (probably at Alina's uncle's place or wherever else we can find a pet-free floor). Alina's grandpa is coming down with his truck to help with the move, so when he gets there on the 31st, we'll load up whatever didn't fit in the U-haul/SUV, do the last of the cleaning, and head out to Edmonton. Hopefully we can move into the new place that same night, but if not, we'll just have to park on the street and spend a night waiting (we've got several options for places to stay). The U-haul has to be dropped off on the 2nd at the Edmonton location, so we've got all day of the 1st to move our stuff in, and it's not going to be all that much stuff.
Whew! Ok, there's an update, for those of you who were wondering how things are going (my mom, for example). I'll probably post more later in the week after I make my Herculean effort to find an apartment and keep you all up to speed.
