NEAR
Mello's obsession, rival and constant annoyance in life. That pretty much sums up Near. All his life Mello's hated Near with an undying passion, or at least, hate was the closest description he could use to describe how Near made him flip his shit like no one else could. He was still feeling this bitterness as soon as he realized Near was trapped here in Siren's Port but he managed to push it aside for priority's sake. Without his help, Near would certainly die here, especially since Kira was here too, and it soon became obvious that if Near died, the whole game and everything he'd been working toward would've been for nothing. That, and Near had his picture. On a deal that he'd get his photograph back so long as he cooperated with Near, he agreed to work with his rival to help catch Kira. Even though things started out quite rocky in the beginning, Mello has begun to warm up slowly to Near and find out even though he's weird, they do work well together. Mello is extremely aware of how fragile Near is and how important he is to the point he'll insure Near's safety before his own. Things such as faulty chocolate and the honesty disaster have awkwardly forced Mello to spill things about himself that he'd rather die before admitting to anyone, let alone Near. But all things considered, Near is turning out to be not that bad. Plus, he's fun to tease and there's nothing more satisfying than learning there are things that Near doesn't even know about, such as war planes. Mello wouldn't really call them friends, but he wouldn't call them enemies either. Partners works, well, for now.
MATT
Aside from Near, Matt is really Mello's only friend. Even then, friend isn't a word Mello ever really uses. Perhaps right hand man would be a better description of Matt; comrade works too. He puts up with Mello's shit, doesn't get royally pissed when Mello takes his pay check to pay for shit and is really, the only person Mello can trust to go to when he needs help. Of course he trusts Near but Near is...well...Near. When Kira kidnapped Matt Mello was absolutely enraged and would've torn up the whole city to get him back if he had to. Ever since Matt's been back, recovering from torture, Mello's been giving him space and not demanding so many things from him anymore. He kind of wants to make it up to Matt somehow, since it is their fault that Matt was dragged into the whole Kira mess in the first place, but he's not sure how. Maybe he'll let Matt kick his ass in Mario Kart. Maybe.
