Today seems to have ended up as a mixture of sleeping and listening to plays/books. Which is not a bad way to spend a day really.
Arcadia was a bit disappointing. Obviously it's hard to get across the time-change, especially the bits where the two points in time are completely interwoven, but in addition to that, lots of the voices just seemed wrong. *sighs* The text is of course brilliant, so I think everyone should listen to it anyway, but really I think there is a need to keep hoping for a proper production of it somewhere...
Forty Years On is brilliant. I prefer it to The History Boys and would love to get to see it. It is very funny, and perhaps a little bit sad, but I think I like it best of Bennett's plays that I've read. The idea of a court of history really intrigues me as well...
Albert's Bridge was a little strange. Interesting, but not that great, in my opinion. Lots of existential whatnot, as ever, but because I love Arcadia so much I think Stoppard's other works are bound to suffer from just-not-being-as-good in my eyes.
I am currently listening to Sheila Hamilton's The Female Husband which is read by Sandi Toksvig, who does a rather splendid Scottish accent. It is, again, interesting, if a little hard to listen to in some ways. The subject matter is something I touched on briefly in Part I when looking at sexual morality, but it's not exactly something I know lots about, so I am worried I am missing some key concepts/interpretations owing to my ignorance. It is certainly thought-provoking though, even if there are random folk-songy interludes for no readily apparent reason...
