I have just been watching Carols from Kings with
carolynp. Well, not technically ACTUALLY with her, owing to Lancs and London being a bit far apart, but we were texting throughout, so it felt as if I was watching with her. Although I was unable to pass the tissues at Away in a Manger.
Christmas carols are so very beautiful. There may have been some singing along. Was a bit weird seeing Ian Thompson in full-on ecclesiastical fancy-dress. He was Newnham's chaplain while I was there, until King's very rudely stole him. It is mildly amusing that Kings has the über-traditional carol service but also a student population who are Lenin-groupies (although the proletariat would in fact spit in their eyes given the chance, ah, irony upon irony).
The three second echo does lovely things to carols and the ickle choristers look so cute. Although, having walked past their school playing fields innumerable times en route to the UL, I am fairly sure they are not as cherubic as they appear... Stephen's choosing to have one of his own compositions sung made me giggle a bit though, despite the fact it was very nice. Also giggled over the poem featuring "angels swimming through the air" because it made me envisage angels in swimming costumes. Presumably not the intention of the poet, but these things happen.
Am now feeling very much as though it is almost Christmas. Huzzah.
