Go For It! and surprise EVERYONE: the thorough & comprehensive approach to Guiding in the C21

Actually, my entry has very little to do with Guiding, but it was such a lovely title I didn't want to risk forgetting it... Perhaps I'll think up some Guiding-related stuff presently...

Well, I spent the morning making notes on the tailoring trade in early C20 Moscow & I am now playing with "Imperial Russia: A Source Book"... the page numbers on the reading list bear no resemblence to those in the book. Meh. Plus I am sitting in a subterranen chamber from the windows of which one may look upon some bits of wall. Gah. Giraffe is possibly even MORE bored than I am and has been trying to surreptitiously snack on the trees/plants there are dotted about the place in here.

Over lunch I listened to a French radio discussion about the crisis in their palliative care system. Everyone who phoned in seemed to be called either Marie or Marie-something. They were also prone to completely IGNORING the poor presenter any time he attempted to get a word in edgeways. One woman was talking about the quality of care provided for her husband while she was dying - about how everything was calm and dignified and serene - and you could HEAR her trying to not-be-upset. It was horrible...

I'm rather excited about Rainbows this evening. I've never really had much to do with them, so it is something new and exciting. Plus of course it gets me away from the revolting Russians.

I am hoping to be able to bring Guiding into either HAP or Politics of Gender in the summer. Because there are some things, like the letters from a mother somewhere in the colonies to her daughter at school in England, about the dangers of Scouting for girls that I feel should be given a wider audience. It's where she asks her daughter if she wishes to grow a moustache... Plus I feel that the chance to write about the political significance of shorts in Scouting would be welcome... I think Guiding ignores far too much of its really rather splendid history. *lesigh*

It is always amusing to explain to people that Guiding is nothing like their perceptions of it though. Or to demonstrate that it actually always HAS been a rather forwards-looking movement. It's when people just WON'T believe you though, even when you wave the evidence before them. Meh...
