On Friday afternoon our FIOS died. I could explain the problem, but you wouldn't understand (actually, I think I got that backwards). Verizon couldn't send someone out until this morning, which was fine, but that meant we were without internet, television, AND THE TIME DISPLAY ON THE CABLE BOX all weekend.
It was rough. Here's what we did.
1. On Friday I took Luke to his first rock and roll concert.
Sort of. Our town is doing a Spring Concert Series with a different band playing every Friday. We walked first to the library and then (in the opposite direction) to the parking lot where the concert was happening, so by the time we finally arrived I was hot and tired and I wanted to go back home. We went into a comic book store to cool down, and then I felt guilty about not buying anything, so I ALMOST got a life-sized inflatable Dalek. But I didn't.
There was a food truck there called Karlita's which excited me because I love the idea of a food truck yet somehow I have NEVER gotten food from one. But they were selling burritos and tacos. And it was HOT out. And I had a burrito for lunch. Someone else was selling italian ice, so we got a strawberry lemonade to share.
I thought five pm on a Friday was a little early for a rock concert, and apparently a lot of people agreed. The place was pretty empty, and it seemed like the band didn't even feel like playing until more people showed up. We stayed for almost an hour and heard four songs. I didn't care for anything they played, until they did an AMAZING cover of "Are You Gonna Go My Way?" Even Luke, who had been running wildly around the parking lot, stopped and tapped his foot. I surmised it wouldn't get any better than that, so we packed up and headed home.
2. On Saturday, I sat on the couch and finished reading a book. Amazing, right? I do read a lot in general, but it's usually a few pages here and there between other activities. But no, Tom, it wasn't the one I'm reading for our book club.
3. Before the internet went down, I had bookmarked a few recipes I wanted to make this week. Then I couldn't get back online to look at the ingredients before we went shopping, so I had to wing it. I spent approximately $700 at Costco on nuts.
4. Luke and I went to Brian's cousin Kristen's baby shower on Sunday. We were running late, per usual, and we got all the way to Dundalk before I realized I DID NOT HAVE THE PRESENT. I'd been worried that the gift bag would rip because it was a little too small, so I decided to carefully carry it out to the car, with two hands, before I woke Luke up from his nap. But apparently that was just my plan and not something that actually happened.
If I'd thought about it for half a second, I probably would have realized that most baby showers are a surprise. But the invitation didn't say it was a surprise, so it didn't occur to me. When Luke and I walked into the party, 60+ women were sitting there staring at us, cameras poised, waiting for Kristen to arrive. Everyone watched us walk in. LATE. WITHOUT A PRESENT.
Fortunately my husband is awesome, so he came and dropped the present off AND took Luke home with him so I could look at cute baby things and eat dessert without chasing him all over the place. I may be getting a touch of baby fever again. Just a touch.
5. My dad got two trees in the mail from BGE for some reason, and after deciding he had nowhere to put them in his yard, he planted them in mine.
Can you spot them?
Our hose won't reach that far, so I have to lug five gallons of water in a cooler out to the trees every day to water them. Because of their dubious origins and my inability to grow anything other than mold, I'm afraid they're going to die. But I really, really, really hope they make it. Especially since my lovely neighbor just dug up all the trees and flowers next door with a Bobcat and threw them in a dumpster, so this little corner of the world currently looks like a wasteland.
