The king's speech and Black swan

I recently saw two movies. The king's speech and Black swan.

I saw The king's speech with my mum two days ago, and I was completely blown away. It was a beautiful, touching and riveting movie that haunted me (in a good way) long after I watched it. When I watched the trailer, I knew the movie wasn't about a man getting over his stammer, it was a movie about a man coming to terms and eventually getting over his insecurities and pain and standing up as a king needed by his people, and the man who helps him do this. It really was wonderful. The acting was top notch. Heck I really liked Helena Bonham Carter in this one. Mainly because SHE WASN'T IN A TIM BURTON MOVIE. WOOOOOOAH. But really, her role was just charming. I actually noticed a difference in her acting. She wasn't just Helena Bonham Carter, she was her friggin character. In Tim Burton's films, there is always a similarity in her acting. But when she's not in his films, another example being Bellatrix from Harry Potter and Marla Singer from Fight club, she acts very well. This movie is right up there as being one of my favourite movies of all time and the best movies I have ever seen. It's right up there with A tale of two sisters, Strange Circus and Noriko's dinner table for me. The king's speech was even better than Inception. I know it's a different kettle of fish, but Inception wasn't as riveting and as emotionally haunting as The king's speech. It also wasn't as character driven. I don't know, I liked it more than Inception. That isn't to say Inception sucked. Inception was amazing. But The king's speech was a lot more amazing is all. And I was the only teenager sitting in the movie theater. It was so funny. The theater was half full, and they were all like late 30s to mid 60s. I felt so grown up XD. There were teenagers all around the cinema that day, but they were probably watching Harry Potter or Eclipse or something. I don't know.

And yesterday I finally saw Black swan, which I also really wanted to see. And, not just to clarify: I LOVE psychological thrillers. A tale of two sisters, 12 monkeys, Suicide club, all that. I can watch them and understand them. Even though 12 monkeys was trickier to understand, I loved still having to think about it. So I'm no dummy when it comes to psychological horror and I'm certainly no noob either. However, as a psychological horror, Black swan was awfully predictable and fell flat on it's ass. I pretty much figured out the whole movie from the trailer. I knew the horrific bits were all halucinations and that she was actually hurting herself instead of others. Dhu. Seen it and seen it done better than this. I guess Black Swan would be for people who have never bothered to watch psychological thrillers. Other than it's predictability, the movie wasn't good. I really wanted to like it, but the plot was just so flat. The acting was pretty decent, and some of the dance scenes were very good, but it was awfully flat. Also one thing I wanted to point out was the actress who played Lily. She looks like some kind of gansta teenage girl from da hood that should be starring in Step up, not a movie with ballet. Also sometimes it seems as though the sexual stuff in it was just thrown in to keep the audience's attention. I mean, why do we need to see her masturbating? Why do we need a full on sex scene? That's another thing I liked about The king's speech, that it didn't use cheap gimmicks to keep the audience's attention. As if it even needed them.

Well that's all for now I guess. I'd love to rant more about both movies but I'd just end up spoiling them.
