It was strange. The starlight that usually filled the rooms of the World that Never Was was missing, today, at least in this particular room. The light from Kingdom Hearts was obscured by a castle turret, throwing Axel's already dark room into total blackness.

Roxas tried to stay calm; he really did. But it wasn't long before Axel sat up and stared down at him.

"Babe. You're shaking. You okay?"

Roxas turned around and tried to find Axel, but he couldn't see a single thing. His hands wandered over the bedspread until his found legs, then slid up until he was holding Axel's face. "I can't see!" he said in a small voice.

Axel nodded. "It gets pretty dark in here when Kingdom Hearts is on the other side of the castle. It'll probably be like this for another few days... Hey. You're still shaking. What's wrong?" Axel reached out and caught Roxas's shoulders, his night vision was better and he could make out a faint Roxas-shaped outline on his bed.

"I'm..." Roxas fought to stay calm. "I'm afraid of the dark," he finally admitted, huddling close to Axel. The flame-haired nobody was his only life raft from the darkness at the moment.

Axel blinked, then wrapped his arms around Roxas. "It's okay," he said, totally not minding their closeness, totally aware that not even best friends cuddle in the middle of the night. But even in Axel's arms, Roxas still shook, feeling lost, like he was about to dissolve into nothingness.

"Hey." Axel smiled then, and held up a hand. "Roxas. You're with me..." And suddenly, a small ball of flame appeared in his palm, throwing the room into high relief. "The darkness doesn't stand a chance."

Roxas stared at the flame for a second, then up at Axel - and realized how close they were. He didn't move, though, except to rest his head against Axel's shoulder. He finally relaxed, then, and his eyes closed. "Thank you," he murmured softly.

Axel held his hand like that for a long time. He was certain that Roxas would wake up if the light was gone, and he wasn't about to scare him again. Sure, it took a hell of a lot of concentration to keep the fire contained... but it was worth it, right? Axel was starting to realize, with some amount of fear, that anything for Roxas was automatically worth it. He sighed and wrapped his other arm tighter around the sleeping blonde. If he ended up sleep deprived in the morning, well so be it. This light wasn't ever going out.
