for anyone who cares (and everyone who doesn't)

This is me, writing what I know. Yes, there is a national election coming up, and a huge problem with the Supreme Court, and a lot of general idiocy. This is a small thing, but it's a small thing close to home, and small things matter. How you deal with small things will turn into how you deal with big things, eventually. Old cliche, but there's a reason it's an old cliche.

1. The Philippine General Hospital is due a new director this year.

2. The Board of Regents elects the PGH director.

2.1. The Board of Regents is composed of 11 people. One of these people is the student regent.

2.2. The student regent, right now, is not enrolled. The Board held a vote to determine if she would be allowed to vote for the director despite not being enrolled. The result was yes, she could vote.

3. The nominees for director are nominated. They are Dr. Alfiler, Dr. Gonzales, and Dr. Domingo.

4. The election is held. Alfiler gets 5 votes. Gonzales gets 5 votes, one of which is from the student regent, who, as you will remember, is allowed to cast a vote. There is a tie. The Board member who abstained from voting was asked to cast a vote to break the tie. He votes for Gonzales.

5. For those who can't do math: Gonzales wins, and is sworn in as the new PGH director.

6. The university president says that the student regent's vote should not be counted. Stuff happens in the higher echleons of the university, and I don't know what they are.

7. Gonzales is unseated. UP guidelines say that the only way you can replace a sworn-in PGH director is either to impeach him or to kill him. Gonzales was not impeached. Since he still answers his phone, I'll have to conclude that he isn't dead.

8. Domingo (who, as you will recall, did not get a single vote) was made the PGH director.

9. Obviously, there is a problem here. I'm not going to talk about how half of the members of the Board of Regents don't have a stake in how the university is run, or how two nominees are supporters of the current president and the other is not, or how Domingo isn't qualified to be nominated in the first place. That matters, but it can be put to the side, because even without, the problem is pretty obvious.

10. And now, 50 members of the UP Manila faculty will be submitting leaves of absence (leave of absences?) on Monday, including the Associate Dean of the College of Med.

This is the best time for "Joe Gon is my director" T-shirts. Also, I should have a tag for "the insanity that is this bloody country that is the best home in the world".

intarmed, miscellany
