Stephen King - The Dead Zone
[DUB] Fiction - Horror (2000 (orig 1979), Warner, 0751504327)
Not being either a Stephen King or a Horror fan I haven't read many of his books. However having started watching the series (I love the satelite sometimes - it's on SciFi) I had this intense urge to find out how the series compared with the book. There are definite links, those links made by a fan when he's using a book as a starting block and running from there. I would suspect that the differences should start to make themselves more evident in the next couple of episodes. The first episode was very derivative - even down to the murderer and other events. (Deirdre trying hard not to do spoilers on either)
The book is definitely darker - while the series holds out hope for John Smith - the central character - the book has him quite dark fated throughout - something you would expect from a horror story. This is not really horror - more dark thriller, the horror is from people not from outside forces of evil.
I must admit I kinda liked it, it won't be going on my to buy list but I wouldn't condemn it. Moments of ambivalence creap into my liking of it and the end does seem to be a bit rushed but overall it's very readable, if kinda funny in that it's largely set in the early 70s and some of the cultural references are very dated.
