Allison Grey was careful driving along the winding road that would take her home after a long night at work. Third shift wasn't her favorite to work at the all-night convenience store that she'd been working at ever since her divorce five years ago, but it wasn't her least favorite either (that was second shift). The quiet morning drives home were almost relaxing.

This particular morning was gorgeous. The snow that had fallen overnight still clung to the trees leaving everything sparkly and white. She sighed. Despite the view, her mind kept going to darker places. Christmas was just around the corner and she still had to find a way to afford a nice gift for her ten-year-old son, Jacob. He really wanted a bike, but a good one was going to be pricey, and a cheap one wouldn't last. Allison hated being strapped for cash, but things were what they were and there were worse things to be, she guessed.

A quarter of an hour into her forty-minute commute Allison had to stop her truck in the middle of the road to avoid hitting a lone bicycle that was just laying there. There were no other cars around and no rider in sight. She got out of the truck to have a look around. The snow in the woods that surrounded the road looked untouched. Not a single footprint in the snow. There was a strange shimmering in the air a few feet in front of the bike. It felt strange, almost electric. She reached out her hand to see if she could touch it. Her hand slid through the shimmering air and disappeared. Her hand felt warm on the other side. A portal, like in the fantasy stories she read when she was younger and had more time to herself. It was impossible, but for some reason, it made perfect sense to her. It was easier to believe in unreal things in the early morning hours when the light was just starting to show in the sky.

She pulled her hand back. The rider of the bike must have gone through the portal. What Allison wouldn't have given to find a passage to another world when she was young. She laughed and she could see her breath. She looked down at the bike and made a decision. Her time for adventures had long passed. As exciting as it might be to jump into an otherworldly adventure, she had responsibilities to get home to. There were bills to pay and a son to raise. She was okay with that. She said a little prayer for the one who left the bike behind. She hoped they found what they were looking for. Then she picked up the bike and put it into the back of her truck. The rider didn't need it now and if she left it on the road it would just get run over. She had found her present, Jacob would be thrilled.
