Briefly, my thoughts on this as it had been in the news. Capital punishment doesn't deter capital crimes. It punishes commuting those crimes. It is not about revenge or making someone suffer, and there are crimes for which I think there is no useful rehabilitation.
Capital punishment is a housekeeping measure. I'm completely ok arguing the morality of it, but it is a bullshit argument to say "bit it doesn't deter x, y, and z." Of course it doesn't. It's not called capital deterrent.
Further, I believe such punishment should be swift and merciful. No medication, no electrocution. A bullet to the brain pan will suffice and is both quick and humane. I think we shy away from that, beheading and hanging because we are trying to sanitize the process. But those methods are pretty certain. The U.S. Army even had a handbook to determine the right way to tie a noose for any given body so that the neck would break cleanly. They literally had it down to a science.
So, disagree if you like about capital punishment. We can discuss that. But I will not even attempt the discussion of someone brings up deterrence. That isn't its purpose.
I want to feed the hungry, educate the ignorant, and house the homeless. I don't want to feed, educate and house people who have stepped so far outside society that they will never reenter it. I suppose that's triage in a social sense.
