Decluttering - Defining priorities

Mar 07, 2010 20:02

I absolutely have to declutter and organize my mail and bill paying life. It is literally getting me into credit trouble. I am currently reading "Let Go of Clutter" by Harriet Schecter, which is making me realize I have clutter areas elsewhere as well. I am trying to follow her advice and tips to help for a better future down the line.

This entry is mainly for me...but at the same time if people see it and have tips that'd be awesome! I think I am going to document the different steps in livejournal as a way to save paper and also help hold myself accountable. Hopefully it won't become a procrastination tool to avoid said decluttering :)

So here is the first step: Define priorities, time amounts, mini-goals, and rewards.

Priority #1 - My Purse (Estimated time to finish 30 mins)
Mini Goals:
1. Empty purse - 15 mins
2. Organize purse - 15 mins
Reward:
The reward for having a clean organized purse is that I'll be able to find everything easily, including car keys and cell phone. Because I'll be able to find everything, I'll get to show it off to Jerad and not have to listen to him give me a hard time :-)

Priority #2 - My Desk (Estimated time to finish 3 hours)
Mini Goals:
1. Sort mail - 20 minutes
2. Sort and Create files - 1 hour (may need to break this down more)
3. File mail - 10 minutes
4. Desk supplies - 30 minutes
5. Email - 1 hour
Reward: I am considering little rewards for each mini-goal, because ultimately I know this is going to be a big task. When it is all done, my overall reward is going to be to play on Perfect World (a free MMORPG) for 2 hours guilt free!

Priority #3 - My half of the bedroom (Estimated time to finish 2.5 hours)
Mini Goals:
1. Dresser Tops - 30 minutes
2. Closets/Clothes/Shoes - 45 minutes
3. Dresser Drawers/Clothes - 30 minutes
4. Laundry - 45 minutes
Reward: Well one big one is that I will be able to eliminate some dust and be able to really clean the bedroom which will help my health. Also I think I'll be able to sleep better at night. I need a fun reward though too. I'm thinking maybe some new sheets/bedding - though while decluttering I may find that we already have too many! Ahah! Sleeping in for an hour without guilt!
