Ok. so today started like any other day. i overslept. i think it was because my roommates "helped" me stay up till 4, so i slept till 12. whoops. the plan was we were going to go to the supermarket and then cook dinner for some other students, that fell through. I don't like it when plans go awry. So my day was all of a sudden up in the air.
After dinking around on the computer for hours, i found a new friend and made plans to go to his place for dinner. Unfortunately no one told me that Florence looks like a totally different place at night. i had written down the instructions to walk over to his place, the map said it would take about 20 min. i was cool with that. i got turned around a couple times and then back on track. apparently i overshot my destination and called to get directions. I learned that 17 min on the phone costs 25 dollars! NO F**KN WAY! so pissed. I'm finding a different carrier on Monday! so there i was, lost in Florence at 11pm after walking for 30 min.
i thought i had found what i was looking for but no. so i decided to just go home. i tried to go back the way i came and got very turned around and ended up back where i started. that took another hour. so i started again. this time i thought i was going the right direction....nope. guess what. Big Circle! whee. so apparently, the Piazza della Libertad has some eery power over me and i couldn't get away. i finally made an executive decision and went the way i thought i shouldn't go. i found a street sign for the train station. YAY. i live by the train station. Went down that street and lost all sense of direction again. no signs to point me the way. i wandered and walked and finally trudged. I found il Duomo and was excited because i should know how to get back from there. nope. walked some more and found the street i had started out on in the beginning of the journey! hooray! i went the wrong way on it. ended up back in another piazza that i didn't want to be in. I finally after more walking found the main street that i wanted to be on. after a false start, i found a hotel office that was opened and asked for directions. i found my street that i lived on and then went the wrong way on that street.
Easy fix, i finally found my apartment and made the horrendous climb to the top floor. now I'm home and it only took 4 hours! hooray.
i wish that i had the foresight to do this in the day time with my camera cuz i found a lot of cool buildings that i don't know if i can locate again! gargoyles and random statues. Houses that reminded me of what Juliet would have lived in when being courted by Romeo. the triumphal arch in the liberty square was really sweet. i don't think i will have a hard time finding that one.
BTW i found out that when i was trying to call my friend the second time, my phone mapped my location...i was on the street i needed to be on and went the opposite direction. i need a compass,
