Status report: New computer.

So D came over yesterday to help me put this beast of a computer together. It was *ungodly hot*, but with the fan on, it was pretty reasonable. I learned quite a bit, which was good, and after a few hours, it was ready for its first test boot. It worked! Right away!

This surprised D, because he was expecting more problems. Aren't there always more problems?

We installed windows and all of the drivers for my mobo and GPU, and then had a nice supper. After we chatted for a little while, D went home and I went to install all of the programs I want to install on my computer, and the fun began.

Where was my mechanical hard drive?? We had unplugged it so that Windows wouldn't install anything on it, instead of the lightning fast and super quiet SSD, but after we plugged it back in it still didn't show up!

And I need that HDD so that I can make a back up image of my system! Drat it drat it drat it. So I gave him a call last night, and he gave me a couple of things to try, and none of them worked. So, being the super great friend that D is, he's coming over again today to help me fix it.

Last night, as I was falling asleep, I had the bright idea to eliminate the possibilities for failure on the drive. First, I switched which port (right word I think?) on the mobo the drives were plugged in to. If it still recognised my vertex 4, then it wasn't the ports.

I then switched the cables that the drives were using. If it still recognised the vertex 4, then it wasn't the cable.

Check and check, so I think I have a bum hard drive? It's not even showing up in the boot menu. ARGH.

So.... right now, I'm temporarily using the integrated graphics in the computer, and my beautiful beautiful GPU is just hanging out on my desk. It is such a huge beast that it makes it difficult to get to things on the mobo, so I figured it was just easier to leave the darned thing off for now, while we're messing around with things.

I think I'm going to wind up going off to Canada Computers and getting them to exchange this here drive for me, and then I can start on my work for today

OH SHIT it's Canada day, they won't be open! NOOOOOOOO! Oh, wait! Never mind, they'll be open today and then closed tomorrow. :D

I also want to go and see the fireworks tonight. It looks like all of the fireworks are quite a ways away, which is a problem since I *still* haven't got any work done this weekend.

day-to-day, computer, work
