I started feeding my rats a new homemade mixy thing with dog food (high quality, of course), cheerios, pasta, sunflower seeds, and unpopped popcorn (not the instant kind). MAN, they think they hit the jackpot (considering I'd been giving them the lab blocks that are all nutritionally complete etc. but boring as hell). I'm buying more stuff for the mix when I get off my duff and go to the grocery store (rolled oats, muesli (?), unshelled peanuts (only a few, they're fatty), Total (full of vitamins!), tri-color pasta, puffed rice, dried fruits and veggies). They can have the mix only as long as they eat all of it and don't just pick out the fatty bits! So far so good. The mice love it too. It's so funny to listen to them eat pasta; their teeth make little clicky sounds like a teensy typewriter.
I want to breeeed~! I wanna make blue dumbo rats (from Momo) and Siamese rats (from Bara- though she's only half Siamese and therefore is technically Himalayan) and long-haired satin mice (from Ronon + long-haired sire). And I have empty tanks! They cry out to be filled! CRY OUT, I tell you!! But the only way I can justify rodent breeding is if most of the offspring go to snakes. And knowing me- well, feeding frozen rats is one thing, I can just about manage live ones that I've just gotten from the pet store and haven't looked at twice before I throw them in the tank, but ones that I've seen raised from teensy babies and have touched and petted and played with? I *would* chicken out. BECAUSE THEY'RE MY BABIES, DAMMIT! >.< ...Maybe if I give the excess ones to Zookeeper. Then I could at least *pretend* they weren't going to be snake food...:P
