i'm a big fan of the 90s cartoon "the critic," which approximately 6 people that i've met have ever heard of. it starred jon lovitz as the voice of film critic jay sherman, who basically hated every movie that came out (his catchphrase was "it stinks!"). in one episode, he decides to go for his second pulitzer prize in film criticism, and writes this awesometastic piece:
I am a movie critic by trade, and until recently, I got paid to tell you people which movies merely stink and which ones you shouldn't screen near an open flame. Well, I'm putting the burden of lousy movies back on you. It's very simple: if you stop going to bad movies, they'll stop making bad movies. If the movie used to be a TV show, just don't go. After Roman numeral II, give it a rest. If it's a remake of a classic, rent the classic! Tell them you want stories about people, not a hundred million dollars of stunts and explosives. People, it's up to you: if the movie stinks, just don't go!
i'm sharing this not just because it applies to TLA (obviously) or the movie industry as a whole, but as a reminder to people who find themselves subject to
bile fascination and/or try to force themselves to like bad movies out of either slavish obligation to the franchise or simply willful self-deception of one kind or another. sure, this comm has provided a lot of entertainment as a result of thrashing the awfulness that is TLA, but wouldn't it be nice if it didn't have to exist at all?
