Wasps "Air-jacking" ants!

Jun 07, 2011 14:46

Ciao all,

The invasive introduced Yellowjacket Wasp (Vespula vulgaris) has often found itself in direct competition in  New Zealand with the country's native ant species, which compete with the introduced wasp for the bodies of dead insects and small carrion. The Yellowjackets have evolved a novel solution- picking the ants up, flying them many metres away and dumping them!
