So, say, if you put them in a warm jacket with a knitted pattern... and then raised them in the cold, would the fur resemble the pattern...

This is also true of Himalayan guinea pigs!

Wow, really? I've raised guinea pigs most of my life and I never knew. Awesome, thanks for sharing!

Also true of Himalayan and Siamese rats I believe.

I think it's more true of Himalayan rats. Their coloring comes in later, but the Siamese rats... IIRC, you can see the points develop as soon as they start developing fur.

Oh wow! My parents adopted a siamese mix kitten last year whose coat has gotten darker over time. He's nearly all chocolate brown now. My parents were wondering what was causing it, this explains it!

Thanks so much, I'm forwarding these links to them. :D

My parents and I rescued a kitten we believe to be part Siamese. Her fur has gotten whiter as it's gotten warmer. I wonder if this is still true for her.

Anyone else get an overwhelming urge to knit sweaters for cats and then shave them, after reading this?

Just me then?

Carry on.

Haha, me too. I'm thinking customization. Patterns, shapes, letters, the whole shebang.
