Ha! We Australians mock your feeble American ticks. Rocky Mountain spotted fever? Tularemia? Our ticks don't need no steenking microbes to kill you dead, they can do it all by themselves.

Ladies & Gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you...

Ixodes holocyclus, the Paralysis Tick

If you stick to the cities, the only wildlife you'll run into is hipsters. Dirty, dirty hipsters, with stinky Converses and butt cracks a-showin'. Also, girls who are orange.

*coff coff..* redbacks, funnelweb spiders in your swimming pool, bull-ants, sharks (such as that one in the Coogee Aquarium that coughed up an arm), magpies, etc...

Oh, I'm sorry, I meant Melbourne -- you know, a real city. ;P

Seriously, I've been surprised -- I've lived here for three years, and the most I've had to deal with is pantry moths. Haven't even had to deal with any scary insects/snakes/etc. up in the mountains. *knock on wood*

And funnily enough, I've been swooped by rosellas, never magpies! But it wasn't scary -- just cute. Little fat birds over my head going "Chee CHEE!" Hahahaha.

heh - clearly you're naturalised - 3 years here and you're already bad-mouthing Sydney

It was a visa requirement. ;)

I actually really like Sydney! Although I encountered far more homicidally angry cab drivers there than funnel webs. And after having to spend altogether too much time with said cabbies -- I'll take the funnel webs!

They really are gorgeous, aren't they? I adore them. I see them a lot around our neighborhood.

There's also a lovely wildlife reserve about an hour's drive out of the city where, if you take a bag of birdseed and hold some in your outstretched hands, you will end up absolutely covered in parrots. It's awesome!
