Series: Use Me Up
Title: Nothing Could Be Worse Than Numb
Author: Magick
Rating:PG-13 for language
Pairing: Zac/OMC for now
Summary: Zac is struggling with the realization that he's very unhappy with his life the way it is.
A/N: This is in no way connected to the other story I have based on this song. Also, I'm experimenting with styles again.

Zac stared out the window at the passing scenery. They were on their way to another city for another walk and another show. It was just going to be another day of screaming, fawning girls and loud music. Zac wasn't even sure if he liked to play music anymore. He didn't seem to like much these days and today was no exception. The bus pulled into the venue and he ran a tired hand through his hair before snatching his sunglasses off the table and meeting his brothers at the door. They made their way inside for the sound check quietly, no one willing to break the blessed silence. It would be broken soon anyways.

After the sound check they got ready for the walk. Taylor was layering on clothes as if he were going into the arctic. Zac grabbed his jacket and smirked. Taylor had been sick lately but Zac had managed to avoid the bug. Taylor caught him smirked and flipped him off before flouncing off in a huff. Zac rolled his eyes. Taylor was such a queen sometimes. Zac forced the most realistic smile he had onto his face and walked out to meet the fans. He mentally prepared himself to the inane things they would say to him and sighed. Zac wasn't sure why he was doing this anymore. Nothing made him feel anything besides annoyance anymore. Just as he was walking out the door his phone began to ring and his wives picture flashed on the screen. Zac scowled and pressed ignore.

The walk was a great way to clear ones head. He turned his mouth on autopilot. He knew how to answer their questions.

"Where did Johnny go, Zac?"

"If we knew then we wouldn't ask the same question in the song."

"Zac, can I take a picture/get an autograph?"

"I don't normally do that on the walk."

"I'm soooooo glad you're helping Africa!"

"Yeah, it's a very real problem that people don't realize that they can help...blahblahblah..."

Inside Zac's head he was thinking very seriously about his life. What had sucked all the life and happiness out of his music? Why did he feel so numb and cold all the time? How could he possibly ask for more? He was rich, semi-famous, he had a healthy son and a wife. He didn't have to work another day in his life and he'd be set. What was missing?

The answer was becoming abundantly clear.

A new fan was talking to him now. The difference in voice jerked him out of his thoughts and he looked to his left in confusion. Standing beside him was a beautiful blonde man with glasses covered blue eyes. Suddenly Zac was very thankful for his sunglasses because they hid the way his eyes widened in shock--then slid up and down the mans lithe body.

"Zac, are you alright?" He asked, his voice tinged with worry.

"Yeah, I'm fine. Just a little spaced out today. What were you saying?" He recovered quickly, putting on his most charming smile.

"Oh, I was just asking you about the other walks you've been on during the tour. Were they all as rainy as this one?" The blonde man flashed a smile and Zac was hooked.

"Pretty freaking much man. Tay has already caught a cold once because of it. The fall is really not the best time for these, is it?"

"It's really not. I honestly cannot afford to get sick but I knew I had to do this barefoot. Especially if I was going to b near you-- I couldn't have you seen me being a wuss. I'm Jason, by the way." He held out his hand and Zac shook it firmly.

"I'd introduce myself but you seem to already know my name." Zac and Jason laughed together. "And I wouldn't think you were a wuss. Plenty of people keep their shoes on. It's not a rule or anything."

"But then I wouldn't get the true experience. It's all about getting down, dirty and wet with Hanson-- isn't it Zac?" Jason winked and Zac felt himself begin to blush.

"I think that's the fantasy that at least half these girls have." Zac chuckled nervously.

"Not just the girls, I'm sure." Jason leaned close and whispered against his ear.

Zac turned to respond to him but he was too slow. Taylor was rounding everyone up and Jason had melted into the crowd.

Zac pushed through the crowd until he reached his brothers. Taylor had just launched into a long winded speech about Africa and the walk so he allowed himself to space out once more. Zac felt more alive right in that moment then he had in a very long time. Flirting was something he had plenty of opportunities to do-- what with fans throwing themselves at him and all-- but he wasn't normally interested in participating. Yet this had been different. He hadn't even thought about the repercussions of his actions, he had just joined into the banter. And it had felt good. Zac sighed and pulled off his glasses to rub at the bridge of his nose. When he looked up again he saw him. Jason was several feet in front of him, staring right at him. Their eyes locked and Zac felt arousal simmer in his blood.

Fuck.

Well, it's better than feeling numb. At least, that's what he hoped.
