~I am dreaming again, right?
Cold sweat is running down my face
It hurts to dream~
He was running, running, away from something…as fast as his tired legs could carry him…
Where was he? How had he gotten here, wherever here was? The suffocating atmosphere was playing tricks on his brain, making him see things in the shadows that weren’t there, were they? The blackness threatened to swallow him up…
“And just how far did you think you could go?” The distorted voice chilled him to the bone, as he froze in his tracks. He didn’t dare turn around. “Poor little Donghae, lost, alone, afraid and with no one to care for you. That’s how it’s always been, hasn’t it?”
His fists clenched tightly, as he struggled to control his voice. “No. That’s not true.”
“Do you really think you can escape from here? Where will you run? Your friends can’t save you. Or maybe they just don’t want to. After all, what are you to them?” The cruel voice was getting nearer.
“They’re my friends. They’ll come for me! I know they will…” He was starting to panic. He had to get away now, away from the horrible things the other person was saying…
“Why worry about them, when you can come and work for me? I don’t pretend to care for you, but at least it’s better than those little friends of yours who claim they do.”
“I-I don’t believe you…you-you’re just trying to get me to tell you what you want to know…” Sweat was rolling down his face. He desperately tried to block out what the smooth voice was saying, but the words penetrated through to his mind, taunting him relentlessly.
“Think about it. Why would anyone love you? You’re just a tool, a way for them to know the future. Underneath the fake smiles and words, they just think you’re weird. They don’t understand why you have your dreams. You’re nothing to them. Nothing at all.”
“NO!”
Hyukjae woke up at the sound of his roommate screaming out, and his blood turned cold at the fear and anguish he heard in his voice. He rushed over to Donghae’s bed. “Donghae-yah! Wake up! You’re having a nightmare! Wake up!” He shook the boy’s limp body, painfully aware of the cold hands gripping tightly to the sheets, refusing to let go.
Donghae gasped loudly and woke up with a jolt, sitting up so fast he nearly knocked Hyukjae’s head with his own. Hyukjae rubbed his back soothingly, waiting for Donghae to come to his senses.
But Donghae’s eyes were still wild and panicky, and he clutched Hyukjae’s hand so tightly that it hurt. Hyukjae ignored the pain and looked at Donghae in concern. “Are you okay?” He mentally whacked himself for asking such a stupid question.
Donghae took in several deep breaths before recounting his dream to Hyukjae, his body trembling in the memory of its sensations. Hyukjae’s eyes narrowed when he heard all the words by the menacing voice, designed to plant doubt in his friend’s mind.
He sat on Donghae’s bed and looked at him straight in the eye. “Donghae-yah, you know that it’s not true, right? We would never leave you anywhere alone like that.”
“But, he said that they think I’m weird…and I’m not worth loving, and what if it’s, what if it’s…”
“We love you.” The simple statement stopped Donghae’s frenzied babble. Hyukjae placed both hands on Donghae’s shoulders. “Don’t ever think that we don’t love you. And of course you’re weird - we all are. That’s one of the things I- we love about you.”
Donghae’s slight look of disbelief hurt a little, but Hyukjae pressed on. “Everyone here - Siwon, Yunho, Heechul hyung, everyone would give their life to save you. You have to believe that.”
Donghae’s lower lip quivered, and Hyukjae smiled at him affectionately, opening his arms for Donghae to take refuge in his embrace. The younger boy’s tears of relief were making his t-shirt damp, but he barely noticed it.
“Hyukkie?” Donghae’s voice was slightly muffled, and Hyukjae looked at him expectantly. “Do you mind… could you sleep with me tonight? Just for tonight, I swear.” Hyukjae promptly got into the bed beside him, nudging Donghae over to make space.
“I…I’m scared of having the dream again. I was trying to run away, and I was so tired, and that voice kept saying that I couldn’t escape…that I’d never be able to leave.”
Hyukjae’s hand found Donghae’s underneath the blanket. “That’s okay. Running is what I do best. I’ll just take you away with me, and we’ll be out of there faster than you can say ‘Heebum’.”
Donghae laughed, and squeezed his hand back, secure in the knowledge that Hyukjae would be there with him. “Hyukkie? If I ever get lost, will you come and take me away? Promise?”
Something in Donghae’s tone made Hyukjae turn to look at the boy, who was already drifting off to sleep. “I will. I promise you.”
~If you slept beside me just once more
If that happened once again
I wouldn't want to wake up~
- Super Junior, In My Dream
**
A/N: This was written before my mutant series in an attempt to figure out what their powers would be, and in case you haven't read the series, Donghae has visions in the form of dreams, and Hyukjae has super speed.
I'm sorry for the lousy writing style here :( I also didn't make it overtly romantic, because in my mind they're not a couple yet in this series.
All comments would be appreciated greatly!
