Chapter 10

Cheers erupted the moment the Geosang High team stepped onto the court, and the other teams looked rather taken aback by all the screaming. It was evident that Hankyung’s entire fanclub had decided to show up for the event.

Meanwhile, Sungmin’s own fanclub was screaming as the pretty host stepped into the stands to describe the game. With a charming smile he hushed his fans, and turned back to the waiting camera. “Today we’re seeing the finals of the Central Zone Basketball Competition, as Geosang High plays against the host, Neul Paran High, for first place!”

He walked on until the other court was behind him. “And here we have Nadam High playing against Garam High - my school,” he winked at the camera, “- competing for third and fourth place. I know who I’ll be cheering for!” He grinned cutely, causing the girls around him to squeal.

Back on the courts, Hankyung took out a video-camera from his bag and walked over to the stands, where his fans started cheering even louder. He handed it to Riin, who accepted it in curiosity. “Mum wanted me to film the game so that she can watch it when I get home - can you record it for me?”

She smiled, knowing just how supportive her aunt was of Hankyung’s games, and nodded happily. Hankyung beamed and thanked her, walking back to his team. Junsu looked around at the surprised fangirls, and nudged Riin.

“Riin-ah, I think you’ve just gained a hundred new enemies.” She gave him a puzzled look, and he jerked his thumb in the direction of the fans. “They probably think you’re his girlfriend, and are all dying of jealousy inside, plotting your untimely demise.” He grinned, and she shook her head exasperatedly.

“Oppa, they’re only jealous because I have the best-looking guy in this school sitting next to me.” Junsu laughed, slipping an arm round her shoulders.

--

Donghae moved restlessly about the dance practice room, trying to figure out just why Eunhyuk would have lied to him about something as unimportant as his address. Could it be that Junsu had just gotten it wrong, and Eunhyuk had moved back during that time? But they were best friends; surely Junsu would know where Eunhyuk lived.

“Are you trying to pace a hole into the floor?” Heechul asked in slight annoyance.

Donghae exhaled and sat down on the floor instead. “Say, hyung, I don’t suppose you’d know where Eunhyuk lives, do you?”

Heechul raised a brow elegantly. “How should I know? Don’t you go home with him every day?”

“Well…yeah, but I think he doesn’t live where he said he did…but why would anyone lie about that?” Donghae realised that it sounded like a convoluted and silly question, and judging by Heechul’s expression, the older boy agreed as well.

“Look, if you’re so curious about that, just go and ask Kangin. He’s been to Eunhyuk’s house before.”

Donghae perked up at the suggestion. Why hadn’t he thought of that? “You’re a genius, hyung.”

“I know.” Heechul watched the other dancer scramble to his feet and bolt towards the door. “Why is it so important anyway?”

Donghae paused, his hand on the doorknob. “Well, because he’s… I mean…I don’t like the idea of my friends lying to me. See you later for our rehearsal, hyung.”

Heechul sighed dramatically as he disappeared out the door. Seriously, Donghae could be so dense sometimes.

--

Donghae ran along the rows of stalls manned by the students, until he saw the familiar boy clad in his white judo gi. He quickly went up to him, only to realise that Kangin was currently being interviewed by…the first flower boy victim?

“And why would you recommend students to join the judo club?” Sungmin asked, holding the microphone out to Kangin, who paused to think.

“Well, I started training in judo because I wanted to grow stronger, and it obviously worked.” Kangin flexed a muscle, and Sungmin smiled encouragingly. “But I recently realised that becoming strong physically doesn’t necessarily make you a strong person. Sometimes being strong means being able to step away from a meaningless fight, and to protect the people who are important to you.”

Sungmin looked a little surprised at this philosophical answer from Kangin, who he’d stereotyped as the type with brawn and few brains. “That’s very true. Thank you very much.” They bowed to each other, and Sungmin went off with the camera crew to interview other students.

Kangin turned to see Donghae staring at him with an interested expression on his face. “What is it?”

Donghae shook his head knowingly. “Nothing. I was wondering if you know where Eunhyuk lives…”

--

Siwon sat at the bench with his other teammates, watching the two teams running around the court dribbling the basketball. Rather, his gaze was focused on the captain of the opposing team. Hankyung was like living art, weaving in and out of the mesh of players with possession of the ball, and nearly always making perfect hoops.

Siwon couldn’t help but stare at the look of concentration on the other boy’s face, marvelling at how Hankyung threw himself wholeheartedly into the game. And each time he poised to throw the ball at the hoop, Siwon found himself torn between wanting Hankyung to score and not wanting his own team to lose any advantage they had.

Finally it was half-time, and the tired players returned to their benches, as Siwon helpfully passed towels and water bottles around. Then he heard his name being called, and turned around to see one of the PE teachers beckoning to him from the opposing team’s side.

“Siwon-ah, could you please show the Geosang Team where the extra water bottles we procured for them were kept?” Siwon nearly sighed - the teachers always picked him to know where everything was, and to carry out menial tasks they could have done by themselves. Then he realised that Hankyung was looking at him expectantly.

“Come on, then.”

They walked in silence for a short while, as Siwon led Hankyung to the PE department staffroom, and indicated the boxes lying on the floor.

“You played a really good game.” He blurted out awkwardly, trying to make the silence between them less uncomfortable.

Hankyung hefted up a box and turned to reward him with a blinding smile. “Thank you, Siwon.” They left the room and started to return back to the courts. “Will you be playing in the second half?”

Siwon considered this. “I guess it depends on whether the coach wants me to substitute anyone. He hasn’t called on me yet, though. I’m not exactly a star player like you.”

Hankyung laughed shortly. “Do you actually want to play?”

It was a question that Siwon had been thinking about during the first half of the game, and he still wasn’t too sure of the answer. The indecision on his face must have been obvious enough for Hankyung to see and understand, because the latter smiled again.

“Maybe when the competition is over, you will be able to tell me why you play. It is worth thinking over.”

And with those words of wisdom, they reached the courts and Siwon put his box down, nodding politely at the thanks of the Geosang High coach, and returned to his team.

--

“Thanks, hyung.” Donghae tried to smile, as he turned to leave.

“Look, I don’t know what Eunhyuk said to you, but I’m sure if you ask him he’ll be honest with you. He’s a good kid.” Kangin ventured, and Donghae nodded uncertainly, before walking off to go to his rehearsal.

“Kangin-ssi!” He noticed three somewhat familiar people coming up to him - Kibum, Ryeowook and Kyuhyun.

“So did you ask Kim-seonsaeng about the principal?”

Kangin wondered why they were still harping on the issue, but decided to be nice anyway. “Yes, and she said pretty much what you guys expected; that the principal wasn’t at all surprised to hear that Siwon was the victim.”

“And Siwon himself said that he didn’t want to get attacked, because his parents got really mad at him. He was set up!” Ryeowook exclaimed triumphantly.

“But we don’t have proof, hyung.” Kyuhyun put in reasonably. “Not unless we can catch the perpetrator or get the principal to confess to the whole thing.”

By now Kangin was getting pretty tired of the matter, and simply opted for the first thought that came to mind. “Why don’t you just ask Siwon if he recognized the person who did it?”

“Wouldn’t he have said so already?” Kibum frowned. “He didn’t even bother to defend himself when I confronted him.”

“Well, no offence intended,” Kangin said, though his tone was slightly exasperated, “but Siwon doesn’t like you very much, does he?”

Kibum rolled his eyes, while Ryeowook nodded smugly.

“It’s more likely that he’d tell Ryeowook-ssi if he’d seen anyone, rather than tell you.”

Kyuhyun’s eyes widened slightly. “And considering how Kibum-hyung puts everything on that website for others to read, Siwon-sunbae obviously didn’t want it to get any more attention than it already had.”

“Alright,” Kibum grumbled, a little put off by all the bashing he was receiving, “then Ryeowook can go and approach Siwon, though he’s probably at the basketball game now.”

Ryeowook hurried off in the direction of the courts, and Kyuhyun began following Kibum, saying something about the famous rock singer Yesung being in the school right now.

Kangin shook his head in disbelief. Did everyone expect him to solve their problems?
