Summary: Everyone needs a friend to taste-test their newest recipes, and Kairi's no exception. Spoilers for end of KH II.
Author's Note: By day I'm a baker, and by night I write fan fiction about baked goods (*head, wall, bang*).
“Cookie?”
Riku looked up from his perch on the bent paopu tree. He’d been composing a letter to Mickey, something simple to keep his friend up-to-date. It was a weekly thing, and Mickey was always sure to return the favor. The paper was easily brushed aside, however; he'd run out of things to say that didn't consist of: ‘School, school, caught Sora and Kairi kissing, school, school.' It was dull, even to him.
But the face smiling down at him, offering a lopsided cookie- she always made his life exciting. Even if all they were doing was replaying a conversation they’d had a million times.
“Sure.”
Some might consider the cookie a death sentence, and Riku was no exception. Everyone on the island knew Kairi’s cooking left some things to be desired, but she tried so hard that Riku hadn’t been able to tell her.
The redhead smiled while cradling a cup of milk, which, he presumed, would be given to him once he finished the cookie. He was thankful for that.
“What’s it for?” Riku needed to gave himself a few minutes to steel his nerves. Heartless were nothing compared with the princess’ baking.
Scooting closer, Kairi’s blue eyes quested over and around Riku without taking an inch of him in. She seemed pleased with her search, and leaned in to whisper (warmth sending shivers of emptiness up his spine), “Sora’s birthday. I’m hoping to surprise him after class.”
A smile pulled up from his chest and out of his mouth. Sora deserved cookies, and Riku knew his best friend would love them even more because they were from Kairi. He bit down hard, teeth warring against lumps of gritty baking powder.
Swallowing, he reached as casually as he could for the milk that Kairi was happily handing him. “How was it?”
Her voice was hopeful, causing Riku to wonder how many batches she’d made before she’d decided they were good enough to try on him.
Draining the milk he set it beside him on the wide trunk, and reached out to brush a bit of melted chocolate from her cheek. Her grimace stood out as she quickly pulled away. Kairi didn’t scoot far, just enough to let Riku know he’d gone as far as his position as her best male friend was allowed.
The cookie’s powdery clumps absorbed Riku’s guilt as he smiled as cheerily as he could manage. “Sora won’t be able to resist.”
