“You can’t really believe in this stuff.”

Petulant lips sat on the other side of the bleeding silk cloth that divided Riku from his best female friend. “Oh come on! After all the stuff you did, how can you say you don’t?”

“Easy.” An eyebrow stretched higher into his metallic hair, and a hand reached out and retrieved a card from the cloth. He flipped it around, examining the image of two overflowing goblets.

“Give that back! You’re not supposed to pick them up yet.”

Shrugging, Riku replaced the card and adjusted his lance-long legs to fit on Kairi’s canopy bed. “So what do we do now?”

“I thought you didn’t care.” She was reclaiming her tarot cards, glaring at him all the while.

Skepticism shimmered and died as he stretched his arm out to touch her. “Kairi, if anyone can read my future, it’s you.”

Their eyes met, and blood glistened under her cheeks. Gaze steaming, Kairi lowered her eyes to the rose and pine quilt below her. “Yeah.” Her body was shying away, but her voice was firm.

Riku’s arms fell back and Kairi leaned forward to show him her cards up close. Wrinkled paper smiled up at him, whispering stories that Riku longed to hear fall from the auburn girl’s lips.

Tanned hands sorted the cards, explaining that the minor arcana were going to be left out. “It’s easier that way.”

“Okay.” A reassuring smile greeted one that was happy to oblige.

“I’m waiting, Kairi. Show me my future, wise one.” Crinkled hands and a wobbling voice conspired with his taut grin to betray his teasing. The silver haired teen was unable to resist-he chalked it up to spending too much time around Sora

Her eyes widened as his hands shivered closer. “Riku!” The quaking arms swept out to tickle the laughing form. She shivered and shrieked, tumbling backwards onto the bedspread and inadvertently bringing her tormenter with her.

Cards flowed onto the floor as his tickles shifted into caresses, and her giggles morphed into moans. Guilt panged between them, sorrow over betraying their Keyblade Master spiraling deep inside; Kairi whispered warnings that neither one cared to heed.

Only their essences mattered while their lips battled for control, licking then surging and nipping; fears were shed behind, empty shells laying in a crumpled heap besides the quivering bed, obscuring nine glimmering goblets and their maroon interpretation cloth.

Note: This story moves along fine without knowing all the meanings of the cards, so I didn’t bother to include them (but if you know them I'll give you a cookie and a deeper fic). This story is my late-night rendezvous with symbolism, to balance out my recent “deep means what?” pieces.

If you're really curious as to what the tarot cards mean you can find my interpretation here. :)
