First word from
don't make me wait for you.
Dreams played very little role in marriage, Liyin knew, not in her world anyway. She could not rely on rushes of emotion, on unexplainable palpitations to justify her choice in her future partner in life. There was no place for ideal aesthetics and compatible personalities.
And yet…
And yet…!
She gently fingered the ribbon in her hand, a simple slip of pale pink fabric that Jongdae had pressed into her grasp as he had shook her hand goodbye. It was not the usual method of parting between a gentleman and a lady, but he had been discussing management techniques with her father, who had been praising the way she was mastering household management skills from her mother, and after listening to her thoughts on what her ideal method of running a household, he too had been filled with praises for her. When he had to depart, he had insisted on parting ways in a business-like manner in acknowledgement of her abilities as a future Mistress of the House.
And now, here she sat in their front drawing room, turning her thoughts over and over in her mind as she played with the gift he had left her.
She wanted to know what he was about. She wanted to know what he had been thinking of when he had praised her and when he had handed her the ribbon. She wanted to know what had been behind that gleam in his eyes as he had watched her all afternoon.
Because it had made something in her spark in recognition, reminded her of a dream she once had a long, long time ago, before she had known any better.
But those questions would have to wait for another day, one in the distant future, one that might not even come.
Quietly, she smothered the hope that had been unfurling within her breast.
