She can’t sleep.

She can summon the courage to close her eyes, muster the strength to turn back sheets and blankets, look away from the crimson ticking seconds-into-minutes-into-hours dancing on the clock face. But it’s 12:30, and tonight she just can’t sleep.

She’s up with her thoughts tonight, sitting on the end of the bed keeping herself awake. There’s too much to think about to sleep, and she stays up to think.

She thinks about home, about familiar cobblestones and streetlights, about silver and blue and gold, skies meeting bridges meeting unfrosted windows and reflections of sunlight, Earth not unlike the world they’re wandering--she thinks about home. And sharing it with him.

She thinks about him, about Quinn, about making room in her life for circuits and science and cologne and will he leave the seat up, about the little things; does he drink tea and will he walk everywhere too and can she share living space with more than just a grey tabby called Rigel? He’s invariably connected to her thoughts of home--she thinks about him.

“You know I’d walk a thousand miles...”

She thinks about life. She thinks about romantic artwork and making the room on her walls, about the money it would take to buy a piano, about will he mind if she plays it at midnight, random chords and constructs, fragments of songs she knows but he doesn’t... or maybe he does. And she thinks about school; should she finish, should she practice, should she specialize and can she tell her own set of problems to him at the end of a day, a week, twenty years listening to everyone else’s? Can she live with him, in her own apartment or sharing room in his, maybe starting over and more importantly... can she live without him?

“It’s a long way down, a long way down to the place where we’ve started from...”

Life is interconnected with home, and she can’t separate her world from his, her home from his, her life from his. Or can she?

“Hey... the hell? That you Wade? Put a lid on it, I’m tryin’ to sleep.”

She doesn’t want to sleep tonight.

“Oops... sorry...”

she doesn’t want to sleep.

Because she wants to dream.

Because if she dreams long enough, she might separate one world from two, and maybe someday dream herself closer to figuring out which world is better.

“You and you only, you’ll never be wrong, you’ll never be wrong...”
