Summary: He watches her sleep
Notes: For the writers_choice sleep challenge

In the years that he’s known Sara, Warrick’s seen her in a variety of moods, from happy to sad, from frustrated to worried to pissed off. If you’d asked him a few hours ago, he’d have said that he’s seen every emotion that there is play across Sara’s face, but now he knows that he’s wrong.

He’s never seen her look like this.

Peaceful.

She’s lying on her side, facing him with her eyes closed. As he watches, her shoulders rise and fall with each breath she takes, fingers flexing occasionally against the nubby material of the blankets. Her lips twitch every now and again, but still, her smile doesn’t diminish, and it strikes Warrick that he hasn’t seen her smile like that, not ever.

Just like it strikes him that he hasn’t seen her smile for a long time.

The notion that he’s the one who’s responsible makes him smile, sends a rush of warmth through his veins, and his fingers itch with the urge to reach out and touch her, run his fingers across the smooth skin of her shoulders and back, let them travel upwards to tangle in her hair.

He won’t do that though, partly because he doesn’t want to disturb her.

Partly because he doesn’t want to see the look on her face when she wakes up to see him there.

That’s the reason why he stands up and, with a heavy heart, walks out of her bedroom, leaving her to sleep.

One of them should be able to.
