So this week President Obama came out in support of marriage equality. Sort of.
Admittedly, I've been hiding from the backlash of his statement so maybe my beef with it has already been discussed to death & I've missed it. But the statement I saw had him saying that if same-sex couples are lawfully married then the federal government shouldn't stand in the way of them exercising/enjoying all of the rights opposite-sex married couples do.
Did you see that? Even in his newly supportive stance he's still leaving the civil rights of the LGBT community up to the states. I'm guessing even Faux News couldn't have missed that huge hole. Hence my news blackout. (Well, that & the fact that it makes me crazy that a major agenda of media of all flavors seems to be driving a wedge between the African American & LGBT communities. That's one of my hot-button issues so I'll just leave it for now.)
I reallyreally wish I could be behind Obama more, but after how many years this is how he shows his support? If only he hadn't turned out to be the lesser of two evils . . . I had such high hopes for his presidency in the first year, but now I feel a little duped. I'll still vote for him & talk to people about why, but it'll take a while for me to shake off the Orwellian feeling I've had this week.
If anyone can link me to a discussion that quells my fears about this without also making me want to throw my computer out a window, please do. This is one instance when I really hope I've read/understood this wrong. I'm woman enough to take it all back if I am.
Anyone's free to disagree with me, but if you would do so politely I'll be most grateful.
