After getting checked-in at the hospital, shown to his room and changed into a gown, the anesthesiologist came to give Kris an epidural to which he vehemently refused. (”There’s no way you’re going anywhere near my spine with a needle!”) But the anesthesiologist explained to him that general anesthesia could make the baby stop breathing and therefore cause great danger to it. So with a sour face, Kris let the doctor place an iv into his back to send the anesthesia straight to his spine. It worked amazingly fast and Kris went numb from the belly down. He couldn’t even feel the contractions anymore. Not that they had gotten too painful yet, but they had been getting there. Now all they had to do was wait until the operating room was free and then Kris and Adam could go in and meet their baby after only a matter of minutes.
Once Kris and Adam had been taken to the O.R. prep room, Kris noticed just how nervous Adam really was he paced back and forth in the tiny space between the curtain and gurney. “Babe, why don’t you sit down,” Kris suggested.
Adam shook his head. “No, I’m good,” he said.
Kris sighed. “Well, it’s nice that you’re good pacing around like that, but frankly, you’re making me insane.”
Adam stopped mid-stride and turned to look sheepishly at Kris. “Sorry,” he murmured.
Kris reached out his hand. “Now, come sit with me and tell me what exactly has you so nervous.”
Adam took Kris’ hand and sat on the edge of the gurney. He looked down at their joined hands as his thumb worked circles over Kris’ knuckles. “I’m scared of losing you,” he said softly. “I’m scared something will go horribly wrong and I’ll have to raise this baby all by myself.”
“Oh, Adam,” Kris murmured and reached out to grasp the back of Adam’s neck, pulled him close until he could kiss the black hair on his head. Adam sighed and pressed against Kris’ side, his cheek rested on Kris’ shoulder. Kris stroked his hair and said, “I know this is easier said than done, but you can’t worry about that. This baby and I need all the good energy you can give us while we’re under the knife. And besides, Dr. Landon has been doing this for as long as I’ve been alive. He knows what he’s doing.”
“Yeah, I know, but it doesn’t make me any less worried,” Adam replied.
“What can I do to make you feel better?”
Adam lifted his head. “Kiss me?” Kris smiled and pressed his lips gently to Adam’s. The kiss was short and sweet, but Kris could see that Adam was slightly more relaxed afterward.
“Better?” he asked. Adam nodded and snuggled closer to his boyfriend. Kris let his head drop to the pillow that was propping him up and ran his fingers continuously through Adam’s hair as he hummed softly. They stayed that way till a pair of nurses came to take them to the operating room.
Kris was wheeled into the O.R. without Adam which made him a little nervous. But the nurse had told him it wouldn’t take long for Adam to wash up and put on his scrubs so he could be in the room during the c-section. Sure enough, by the time the drape was put on, blocking the view of everything lower than Kris’ chest, Adam was there, sitting next to him on a stool. “How ya doin’?” he asked from behind his mask.
Kris gave him a weak smile. “I’m nervous now that we’re actually in here,” he answered honestly.
“Good,” Adam said with a chuckle. “I was starting to wonder about you.” Kris stuck his tongue out in response.
Suddenly a doctor in scrubs appeared at Kris and Adam’s side. “Are we all ready?” Dr. Landon asked, his voice a bit muffled behind the mask he was wearing.
“As ready as I’ll ever be,” Kris told him.
The doctor chuckled. “Don’t you worry, Kris, you’re in good hands. My team is one of the best in any of the sects of Pure Love.”
“That only makes me feel a tiny bit better,” Kris replied making the doctor laugh again.
“Just take a few deep breaths and relax. It’ll be over before you know it.” With the way his eyes crinkled at the corners, Kris knew he was smiling at him, so Kris smiled back. The doctor walked away to put on a pair of gloves and Adam turned to his lover.
“See, babe, everything’s going to be just fine. You have an amazing team on hand for this birth and I have full confidence in them.”
Kris raised an eyebrow at Adam. “You don’t seem so nervous anymore.”
Adam grinned from behind his mask. “Weirdly enough, I’m not nervous at all. I’m just filled with excitement. In a matter of minutes we’ll be getting to meet our baby on the outside for the first time. Aren’t you excited?”
Kris smiled and thought about it. Yeah, he was excited to meet their baby… who still had no name. Kris’ smile instantly turned into a grin the longer he thought about what was going to happen. “Thank you,” he told Adam.
“For what?” Adam asked.
“Making me excited,” Kris answered. “I can’t believe that it’s finally time!” He giggled a little and he could tell by the crinkles around Adam’s eyes that his gin had grown wider.
“That’s my boy,” he murmured.
“Okay, Kris, it’s time,” Dr. Landon said from the other side of the drape. “You’ll feel some pressure as I start the incision but you’ll quickly feel relief. No pain though.”
Kris nodded. “Okay, Doc, I’m ready to see my baby. Lets get the show on the road.”
Kris heard the doctor chuckle, then say, “Making the first incision.” Kris felt the pressure that Dr. Landon had been talking about, followed by quick relief. “Starting the second incision.”
Kris looked at Adam and made a face.
“You okay?” Adam asked.
“Yeah, it just feels weird. Like, I can feel it, but I can’t,” Kris answered. “It feels like tugging, but no pain.”
Adam nodded. “You’re doing really well, baby.” Then he turned towards the drape. “How much longer, Doc?”
“Not long now,” Dr. Landon answered. “I have a hold of the head and I’m going to pull it free. Then I’ll suction the nose and mouth. Adam, do you want to watch?”
“Uh, that’s okay, Doc. Just let me know when it’s time to cut the cord.”
The doctor chuckled. “No problem.” Then he went back to work, suctioning the mouth and nose when the head was free and then pulling the rest of the baby out of the uterus.
It seemed like an instant later that the doctor was calling out the time of birth. “Time of birth, eleven-oh-one am!” And just a second after that came the baby’s first cries. Tears began to fill Kris’ eyes the moment he heard them and they began to fall rapidly down his face when Dr. Landon held up the little screamer and declared, “It’s a healthy, bouncing baby boy! Adam, would you like to do the honors?” Adam nodded and went around to the other side of the drape. Kris couldn’t see what Adam was doing, but there was a nurse taking pictures for them that he’d be able to see later of Adam cutting the umbilical cord.
The baby was cleaned off, weighed and wrapped tightly in a blanket, then handed off to Adam who brought the little bundle over to Kris. Adam sat down on his designated stool again and showed the baby off to Kris. “Isn’t he gorgeous, babe?” Adam asked. Kris nodded, unable to speak he felt so emotional, and reached out his hand to touch the baby’s chubby little cheek.
“How bout the first family portrait?” the nurse with the camera, Shelly, asked. Adam looked at Kris for approval. Kris bobbed his head, a sob of joy leaving his mouth as he wiped at his tears. Adam turned on the stool and placed the baby into the shot. On the count of three the picture was taken and so was the baby.
“Where are you taking him?” Kris asked.
“Don’t worry,” another nurse by the name of Wanda said. “We’re just going to take him to the nursery while you finish up here. Once you get back to your room, he’ll be all ready to see you again.”
“Go with him, Adam,” Kris commanded.
“Are you sure?” Adam asked.
Kris nodded. “Yes, don’t worry about me. Just go with him. I don’t want him to be alone.”
“Alright, baby.” With a kiss to Kris’ forehead, Adam went with Wanda and his newborn son while Kris got his incisions stitched up.
From the time Wanda and Adam took his son until the time he was being wheeled into his room, Kris felt like he was holding his breath. But once he saw Adam holding the sweet boy and swaying from side to side, a breath of fresh air filled Kris’ lungs. When Kris was settled in his bed, he made grabby hands at Adam. “Gimme!” he said, almost sounding like a greedy child.
Adam laughed quietly, walked over to the bed and gently handed the newborn over to Kris. Kris grinned as he took the baby in his arms for the very first time. “God, Adam, he’s gorgeous,” he murmured. The baby was just a little thing at six pounds and seven ounces, but he was quite long at twenty-one inches. He was definitely going to take after Adam in the height department. He had a head full of beautiful strawberry blond hair and gorgeous blue eyes like all babies do, but Kris hoped they stayed that color.
After a moment of just staring at his son, Kris looked up at Adam who was standing next to the bed and said, “Snuggle us.”
Adam smiled softly. “You sure I won’t hurt you?” Kris nodded and Adam climbed up beside his boys, curling an arm around Kris. The pair stared down at their baby, still in complete awe over their amazing creation. “You did good, babe,” Adam said quietly. “Thank you for this.”
“This?” Kris asked.
“Our baby, our family,” Adam answered.
Kris tore his eyes away from his son to look at Adam. “Don’t give me all the credit. You helped, you know. He’s half you.”
“Yeah, but if you weren’t from another planet…” Adam teased and Kris rolled his eyes. “But seriously, Kris, thank you.”
“Thank you too,” Kris replied and leaned up a little to peck Adam’s lips. Then he rested his head against Adam’s shoulder as they stared down at their beautiful baby in silence.
After a while, Adam broke the quiet peace that had settled over the room. “He still needs a name you know.”
Kris smiled widely. “And I know just the perfect one.”
