Every day of the next two and a half months seemed to drag by so slowly for Kris. The baby moved around a lot inside of his belly and was constantly kicking him in the bladder. The weekly check-ups with Dr. Landon were pretty easy and didn’t take much time out of Kris and Adam’s days. But the more the baby grew and the bigger it got on the ultrasound screen, the more Kris wanted his pregnancy to end. Like he had said at his first prenatal appointment, he just wanted to hold his baby. He and Adam fought about baby names and how to decorate the nursery when they got home. But it was always in good spirit and the fights always ended with laughs and kisses.
One morning Kris woke up not feeling quite right, but he couldn’t really put his finger on it. He was tired and cranky and his stomach kind of hurt like maybe he had gas. He also woke up to an empty bed and that wasn’t helping his mood in the slightest. He grumbled to himself as he pulled on some sleep pants and a faded t-shirt before padding his way downstairs.
Kris found his mom and Adam in the kitchen talking over coffee, dirty dishes pushed to the side. As Kris got out a glass and poured himself some orange juice he listened to his mother and boyfriend talk. It seemed to him they were discussing something to do with the baby. He smiled to himself and finished off the last of his juice before refilling his cup. He loved how well his family got along with Adam, how they had accepted him as part of the family. It really warmed his heart.
He made his way over to the table and took a seat on Adam’s knee. Adam’s arm circled Kris’ waist, his hand resting on Kris’ swollen belly. Kris set his glass on the tabletop and then pressed a small kiss to Adam’s lips. When he pulled away he winced and rubbed at his belly. “You okay?” Adam asked.
Kris pouted. “Your son is not being so kind this morning.”
“Ooh, we’re already blaming him on me?” Adam said with a laugh.
Kris crossed his arms over his chest. “Yes, yes we are.” Adam laughed again and Kim Allen spoke up.
“Honey, how are you feeling?” she asked.
“Tired, cranky and my stomach is kind of painful,” Kris answered. “Why?”
“Hm, no reason,” Kim replied and looked down at the crossword puzzle she’d been doing earlier. Kris raised an eyebrow but didn’t say anything and turned to Adam.
“Do we have any plans for today?” he asked.
Adam shook his head. “I have nothing planned. I thought we could just hang around today… unless there’s something you want to do?”
Kris rubbed his belly and said, “Laying around sounds good, especially with this pain I have.”
Kim looked up from her crossword. “Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked.
Kris rolled his eyes and then looked at his mother. “Yes, why?”
“It’s just… you’re ready to pop and you’re having belly pain,” Kim said. “It makes me wonder if you might be getting ready.”
Kris laughed. “What? No way. My water hasn’t even broken yet.”
“Yes, but that doesn’t always mean anything, honey,” Kim replied. “Sometimes these things don’t go exactly in order.”
Kris sighed quietly and ran his hands through his hair, scratching lightly at his scalp. “Would it make you feel better if I called Dr. Landon?”
Kim smiled sweetly. “Yes it would.”
“Alright. I’ll call the doctor.” Kris got up with a little push from Adam and made his way across the kitchen. When he reached out for the phone, a sudden gush of fluid flowed from his penis and soaked his sleep pants. He looked down in horror, thinking for a split second that he’d wet himself, before it dawned on him what had actually happened. “Oh. My. God,” he said slowly.
“What?” Adam asked quickly turning to look at his lover.
“Uh… I think you were right, Ma,” Kris said with a delighted giggle.
“I am?” Kim asked.
Kris nodded. “Yeah, I’m pretty sure my water just broke.” Adam and Kim jumped up from their seats and rushed to Kris’ side.
“Oh my god, the baby’s coming,” Adam said when he saw the spreading wet spot on Kris’ pants. And just like that, the house became chaotic with Adam, Kim and even Kris’ brother Daniel running around trying to get everything ready to go to the hospital.
Kris on the other hand, made his way slowly upstairs to change into some dry clothes. Once he was done he waddled back downstairs and sat down on the couch with his feet propped up on the coffee table. He calmly watched the morning news and called Dr. Landon as he waited for the others to stop freaking out.
The phone rang three times before Miss Nancy picked up. “Dr. Landon's office, Miss Nancy speaking. How may I help you?”
“Hi, Miss Nancy, it's Kris Allen.”
“Hi there, sweetie, what can I do for you today?” the receptionist asked.
“Well, I was wondering if I could talk to Dr. Landon. I think my water just broke.”
There was an excited squeal on the other end of the line. “Congratulations, Kris! That's so exciting! Just give me a second to transfer you.”
“Thanks.”
A moment later Dr. Landon's voice came over the line. “Dr. Landon speaking.”
“Hey, Doc,” Kris said. “It's Kris Allen.”
“Oh, hi, Kris. Is everything alright?” the doctor asked.
“Um, yeah, but my water just broke,” Kris answered.
“Right on time!” Dr. Landon chuckled.
“But, Doc, there's something else.”
“Yes?”
“Everyone is running around like chickens with their heads cut off but I'm just so calm,” Kris explained. “Actually, I'm so calm I'm almost freaking out because I'm not freaking out like everyone else.”
“Hmm. Yes, I see. Can you tell me if you've experienced anything else like this during your pregnancy recently?”
Kris thought for a moment then said, “Actually, yeah. I was getting mad a few nights ago and all of a sudden this peaceful feeling just washed over me and I was okay.”
“Well, over the years I've noticed that a very small number of men seem to connect with the baby on an emotional level during the last stage of their pregnancy,” Dr. Landon explained. “It seems to me that this is likely what you are experiencing. Your baby is trying to keep you calm.”
“Oh,” Kris murmured, surprised at this new bit of information, but also relieved that there wasn't something wrong with him for not going nuts.
“Don't worry, Kris, you'll start feeling anxious when it gets closer to the c-section because the baby will be starting to pull away, emotionally, in preparation for it's birth.”
Kris nodded his head. “Well, okay, Doc, thanks for the info. I guess I'll see you soon.”
“Take care till then and remember that everything's going to be fine.” With that, the two men hung up.
When everything had been gathered, Adam and Daniel helped Kris out to the car and then they, along with Kim, drove to the hospital where Dr. Landon was waiting for them just like he said he'd be.
