The dock was cold like the water is was submerged in. The girl no older than nine stood with her feet covered in water, watching the sunset. She wore a long lavender dress which hem skimmed the top of the water as it moved about her legs in the breeze. The girl had fair features and hair as black as coal that matched her equally dark brown eyes. Behind her lay a forest with dark shadows, which had began to creep out of their hiding places as the night approached. The world was completely silent not a creature stirred in the forest, not a wave broke upon the shore. It was so silent.
“It’s like we’re walking in heaven”, said a gentle voice behind her. She didn’t turn but closed her eyes and breathed in slowly, absorbing the world around her. Behind her stood a young man of about the same age who had a dark complexion; with dark red hair that was so long it covered his warm brown eyes. He stood behind her those eyes watching her every movement.
“It’s no more than an Ohio sunset on an ordinary lake”, she said in a drab tone that darkened the area around her. Silence followed this remark leaving them uncomfortably quiet.
“Maybe you’ll see someday”, he said with sadness in the tone of his voice, “come we better go back they’re probably looking for you.”
“They’re not… and you know they’re not why would they?” she said softly, tears hanging on her every word.
“Why wouldn’t they?” he said with doubt in his own words, “I’m sure they are?”
They stood there still for some time; then once the sun had finally hid itself behind the horizon she turned around to face him. He didn’t say anything just watched her waiting for her to move, to do something. Then she began to walk slowly towards him the water around her ankles making smooth, elegant ripples as she moved through it. She watched the boy in front of her draw closer as she moved. This boy, which she had grown to know as her only friend… this boy who would someday change her life.
