Weekly Discussion 1: Welcome!

Apr 12, 2011 03:35

Hello fellow writers!  Welcome to write_dattebayo !  It is my hope that your participation here is both beneficial and fun :).  If you haven't already, please make sure to fill out the questionnaire at the introductions post and feel free to comment on the other members' to get to know one another <3.

Week 1's assignment is already posted (and if you'll note, for quite some time!) to serve as a preview of what upcoming assignments and/or prompts will be like.  However, we will not officially start the community up until Friday, April 22nd to give members enough time to trickle in and get situated.

- A Little About the Community, It's Creator, and It's Creation -
Back in September 2010 I was trying to think of ways to get me back into writing and actively churning out stories.  I've amassed many ideas since joining the fandom in 2006, but have often faced a creative block in actually writing the stories they're intended to evolve into.  Then I thought, "What I need is a writing group."  And voila!  write_dattebayo  was born!

Now you may be wondering, "Sooo if you thought about this way back in September, why the huge delay in advertising the place?"  My main reason is because I don't want this community to fail.  I wanted to get as clear a concept of the community's purpose and function as I could before inviting other aspiring authors to partake.  Its taken me nearly six months, but I think I've done all I can on my own :).

That being said, write_dattebayo  is looking for moderators!  Moderators must be active participants in the community and able to commit to helping post scheduled events. If interested, please fill out the moderator's application and I will get back to you ASAP!

- How The Community Will Operate -
Weekly Assignments:

Weekly Assignments will be posted every Friday.  You will have until 11:59pm (EST) the following Friday to get your submission in and guarantee a critique of your work.

You may post an assignment late, but it will not guarantee a critique.  Make sure when posting a late assignment to put [LATE!] in the Subject Header of your post.

So starting Friday, April 22nd you will have until 11:59pm (EST) Friday, April 29th to get your submission in for a guaranteed critique.  Any entry that comes in after will be deemed late and, while reviews are encouraged regardless of timeliness, will not have someone assigned to look over it.

Posting your entry to the community is fairly simple.  In the body of the post include the following information:

Title:                                <---- Whatever you want to call your work.
Author:                           <---- You (obviously)
Exercise:                       <---- What writing exercise/prompt was issued.
Word Count:                  <---- How many words you wrote
Characters/Pairings:  <---- What characters/pairings you used.
Warnings:                     <---- Anything you feel you should warn your audience about (i.e. possibly offensive or squeamish material, spoilers, etc.)
Link:                               <---- A link to your assignment if not placing behind an LJ-Cut
Reflection:                    <---- The most important aspect of your post!  Tell us how you feel you did with this exercise; your trials and tribulations with it.  Was it helpful at all?  What challenges did you face with it?  What would you like to improve on?  What did you learn about your writing and ability in doing this?

Critiques:

How the guaranteed critique works is as thus:  If you post an assignment, you critique an assignment.  At the end of the submission period a list of all assignments posted will be compiled and each author will be assigned an entry to review.  Who will review what depends largely on:
  • Does the reviewer like/feel comfortable reading Yaoi/Yuri?
  • What the reviewer likes to read
  • What the reviewer doesn't care to read
  • What the reviewer will absolutely not read
  • And how many assignments the reviewer is willing to critique per week
This is why the "Reading" section of the introductions questionnaire is so important!

Once you've been assigned your posts, pay particular attention to the author's "Reflection" of their piece when writing your critique.  And while I feel this goes without saying, be sure to be respectful and courteous of them :).

Weekly Discussions:

Weekly Discussions will be posted mid-week (typically Wednesdays) and propose a random question to (you guessed it!) spark a discussion.  The post's main purpose, however, is to get everyone to socialize and bring a real sense of "community" to the place :).

And that's basically it!

So, all that being said... How do you guys like the community so far? :)

weekly discussion, faqs
