We expected great things from you

At the Ark tonight for some music. We missed the first act on the bill but caught the second, who didn't say what they were called, but I assume were Snide Rhythms. For a few seconds they sounded like the Minutemen. They didn't have a guitarist or any other instrumentalist, just bass, drums, and shouty bloke. Given practice they could approach McLusky or Future of the Left, but they did sound a bit wannabe-Hoxton. Their bassist, whose name is Hugo, was also in the next band, Randa Discotheque, whose singer had a ginger beard and hair and they had 2 songs about cannibalism and one about an edition of the Daily Record in 1993.

Finally, with the audience still no more than 20, came The Hussy's. I've seen them about 3 times before, mainly supporting, and once headlining a charity night at Cab Voltaire, which got more than 20 people. When I saw them last, a little over a year ago, they had Radio One play for one of their songs, maybe Please Don't Call On Me At Home or Napoleon Dynamite or We Expected, and they seemed certain for big success with their big-voiced cute blonde singer. Sadly, it didn't happen. Tonight they were less good, with their new songs a bit variable, and only playing for 30 minutes, though they finished with Tiger and We Expected, both of which are ace. Check out their MySpace or Spotify.

Also tonight I saw a bottle of Buckfast in a phonebox and realised that if I had taken a photo of every bottle of Buckfast I've ever seen in inappropriate places in Edinburgh, I would have a great photographic record.
