I hate this job. The people are cool, but the atmosphere is kinda creatively stifiling. So, I had to design a flyer for the annual family day picnic. Usually, it helps when I know where the event is going to be held. Well, I knew of one place, spent all night designing it (I'll upload a link to it later) only to find out that it may not be held at the fair like I was told the day before (which was when I found out I needed to have it done for the next day, lotsa warning there). Those of you that know me know that I LOATHE clipart and refuse to use it. Its just a quirk of mine. So this flyer is designed with no clipart used. Which means I spent all night designing the Ferris Wheel in illustrator along with the other elements. Well, the only thing that may need to be changed is the ferris wheel might be replaced with prather.
This brings me to my second problem, they want professional products, but they don't want to spend the money for any of the software. I was asked to design a manual for them (not sure if i can post that though, it might be work sensitive) and, silly me, thinking that this is a professional document, I design it in indesign (you know, what most books are designed on, along with most magazines. If they don't use indesign, they use quark. I guarantee that they don't use word.). So I finish it, and it looks great, but my boss never told me that it has to be in a word format so they can edit it. There goes a week of work. But the biggest problem about it, they're not willing to spend the money to buy the software. A company that just saved $300,000 one quarter by changing vendors can't spend $1,600 for a suite of software to work with what I give them.
Its just, I can't stand it when people want professional results but don't want to spend the money to actually get the tools needed. I mean, I know that it could be done in word, I know that. But that means that my images have to be larger (i know word doesn't read uncompressed photoshop files) in file size cause I have to compress them, and a lot of cussing on my part cause we all know how much word loves fucking up margins. Its just annoying.
On atleast a semi good note, I get to go home this weekend and pack because I move into my apt this comming week (I will post pictures of it, don't worry).
O well, off to do another project, a photo slideshow for powerpoint (thank god its going to be done in Final cut, getting music to play over more than one slide, not possible).
P.S. - those little $15 iTunes cards at walmart are the greatest thing in the world. I don't think I will ever buy a real cd again. the iTunes music store is fucking awesome!
