Were it my coat I'd have skulls and bones throughout.
Plain background for buttons, purple for collar and cuffs.

'Tis a pity the skulls don't look a little more like something off a medieval mortuary list (those things are cool), but they're big and flat which makes them oddly official looking =) Yeah, my neurons are leaning towards skulls, although they'll be a bit put out if this means everyone asks 'are you a pirate?' =P

Perhaps you should take up smelting your own buttons.

I keep considering it whenever I do a sewing project - always takes me too long to find decent buttons and they're always damn expensive... Hmm. Actually if I had some sheet pewter or copper etc then I could make some either flat or domed and with a pentagram stamped on them... *sigh* I shouldn't be starting new projects, there are already too many I haven't finished!

I am not convinced about the purple. I voted for "more military" but could maybe come round to the skull and crossbones or the star pattern. Don't like the pentagram, quite like the trefoil. Didn't notice "similar to the other buttons but smaller" was an option at first -- sounds the best.

This will be a very fine coat.

What exactly is "sadlyfoxears" about? I like it.

I looked for good buttons with military style insignia or crests on them but was disappointed - any time I found ones I liked there were never 18 of them
