1. I don't think materials should be needed on for any profession. Therefore, I think JC mats are greed only.

Why? Whereas a piece of armour is an upgrade in its own right, a single gem or material is normally not enough for crafting an entire item and therefore does not qualify as a whole upgrade and/or skillpoint. And on the subject of skillpoints; it's not gaurunteed that you'll get the skillpoint if you make the item using that material which is only a part of the item. Therefore it's not proportional to need materials as it is to need armour. The item might represent skillups to someone else, too.

My strongest argument, though; what's to say the person needing the material isn't doing so to make gold, either by selling it outright or by crafting something and selling it? And what's to say the rest of us don't need gold, too? Fairest is to greed, if that's the case (and imo it frequently is). Having the profession doesn't, imo, give you rights to those materials in a group setting.

"No" also makes the "but I want to need it too for my alt!" argument null and void.

2. No. Same argument as above.

2a) No.

(disclaimer: apologies if I come across grumpy - it's not a personal attack or anything. I've just had a bad day. Have tried to express my views reasonably!)

No, your answer was good and I enjoyed reading it! Good points! I didn't think of all of them (especially the old "but it's for my allllt" mentality)!

However, in a group where someone else was hitting Need on gems, would you also hit Need? (If you were on a JCer.)

I wonder because, while blacksmiths only need the ore (to turn into bars) for most of their professions, JCers need all of that *and* the gems-- which means they probably need double or more of the ore. So that was sort of my reasoning behind it. But I can see the holes in that, now. Hehe.

This is a really good response. I'm just going to agree so I don't write out the same thing.

^This pretty much sums things up for me. PUGs, especially where everyone has an excuse.

However, if people ask politely ahead of time about rolling on gems, I would probably say yeah go ahead. Patterns I think, BoE or BoP should go first to those who actually have that profession, usable at that time or not.
