The Healing of Two Tanks

Dec 17, 2010 11:37

Have any of you Ladies noticed differences in healing-needed for different tank classes?

It's Been Driving Us Nuts... )

role: tanking, druid: feral, paladin: protection, role: healing

It will be really hard to give you any sort of useful answer without armory links, although I could understand why you wouldn't want to do that.

I did link my own Armory (the Talent section, but still my actual Armory page).
I linked his two Specs and stated his Tanky stats. If there's another stat I should mention for a Paladin Tank, tell me and i'll go look it up. I'm not comfortable linking directly to others' Armory pages without their permission (unless it's a dear_gnome letter and the person is extremely horrible...then I feel no guilt).

*nod* it's still tough because we can't see glyphs. It might also just be things like how you guys play. Is he using word of glory to heal himself ever, or is all his HP going into shield of the righteous? It's hard to say. Maybe you're timing your cooldown use better. Or maybe the groups she's been in with you are CCing or interrupting better?

OTOH, arashi + syven might have the answers. Although they seem to be in competition with each other.

Actually...I Fail!Kitty when the Pally is tanking. And all our runs are Guild runs, and my guild loves CC. So CCing happens.
As to the Pally's CDs and playstyle...I can't say. I'll take a peek at healing-done next time we run something and see what he's doing.
His Glyphs...both specs he uses Hammer of the Righteous, Shield of the Righteous, and Seal of Truth, with Ascetic Crusader, Dazing Shield, and Divine Plea.

Block is a major source of damage mitigation for the Protadin, and yes it is directly raised by Mastery. Mastery is the end-all-be-all stat of the Protadin and should be raised until Block/Parry/Dodge total 102%, with the heaviest emphasis on Block/Mastery (never gear for parry/dodge).

Basically, Protadins just start off squishier. Once that Block is high enough, it essentially functions as a passive 30% damage mitigation.

This is what I keep hearing, that mastery -> block is where it's at from prot pallies.

"40% Block, 8.9% Parry, 11.6% Dodge" - Err 40% block is probably pushing him over into the diminishing returns area. His parry needs to be higher, as well as his dodge - working toward %15% or so as evenly as possible.

(I only know this because my best friend/GM/pocket tank is a Tankadin and he's explained this to me.)

That is old information. Mastery/Block has no diminishing returns and should be raised to the cap of 102.4%. Dodge and Parry have had their diminishing returns combined and are, for all intents and purposes, the same thing (meaning when one hits cap they both hit cap regardless of their relative values).

Dodge and Parry should essentially be ignored and Mastery should be geared for to raise Block to the 102% avoidance level.

Thanks for this info! I'm going to have to do some research for DK tanking in Cata now. *head hurts*

You're welcome!

You're on your own for DK's, though. The Mastery=Block thing is specifically a Protadin thing, obviously :)

Hmm... current theorycraft actually has pally tanks ahead of everyone else due to WoG use. It's possible he's not doing enough of his own self healing.

Has he looked into reforging at all? Reforging avoidance or threat stats to Mastery is a good idea and might help.

I know he's talked about reforging, so I think he has indeed poked his gear. I can't say to what extent.
Thinking on it...i'm guilty myself of forgetting Reforging exists. I should probably start looking at that option. <.

Upon further running of Heroics (with me fail!kitty-ing my way through)...Mr. Tankadin doesn't show on the healing done meter at all. Not even when viewing overall data from the entire run (or multiple runs). Nothing. Granted I don't know much about pallys in Cata, but that...might explain a hell of a lot of the issues with healing him.
Do you know if there's anything that wouldn't show on a healing done meter that he might be doing?

Do you have Skada? You could check his absorbs. Guarded by the Light should mean that using WoG turns any overhealing into a bubble, so if he only used it at full health it might show up like that?

It's quite possible, though, that he's concerned about threat and is using all his Holy Power on SoR or Inquisition instead of WoG. This is very much in line with the 3.3 philosophy of heroics, but the balance seems to have swung the other way.

Yeah, I'm tanking on my paladin and have been feeling like I'm taking a lot of damage. I'm level 84 so my stats/gear aren't quite at your friend's level yet, but it definitely has been bothering me ( ... )

Mastery! Lots and lots of Mastery!

I suppose I should mitigate my statements by saying even the EJ thread says "Don't go crazy" on reforging for Mastery. EJ is where I get my information as well (I'm a Main Tankadin), and is a great resource if you can parse their over-analytical statements. They often have trouble making their assertions understandable in clear language.

The Protadin info, though, is invaluable. Give that thread a good long examination and follow it as much as you find to be fun. They're crazy-obsessed with being the best you can possibly be. You don't need to be that good. Get as much Mastery as you can, get as close to 102.4% as you can without sacrificing things like Hit and Expertise, and you'll do great.

Oh, and blow your cooldowns. Don't save those things. There's no reason to, they refresh plenty fast enough.

Do you know if I figured out my avoidance correctly in my first reply?

If that's the right number and I'm trying to get to 102.4% I've got a hugely long way to go T_T
