Considering a Change

Yay one of those rambling navel-gazing sorts of posts.

So I left my guild recently because the people our GL left in charge when he went on hiatus thought talking like overgrown frat boys in Vent was their God-given right and I got sick of it, especially when they told another raider who was more vocal about being offended to STFU. But that's not what this post is about!

What this post is about is a major change I'm considering. See, my main is a Death Knight. As someone who loves Forsaken and loves to RP as Forsaken and also loves tanking, it was like Blizzard said, "Hmm, what kind of class would be totally perfect for Jen?" I've always considered him a tank first and foremost, but I've dabbled in DPS. When I had an overflow of badges I got the DPS T9 set, and I've never turned down an offspec roll for DPS plate. As it currently stands, with raid buffs I can pull ~7k DPS on a fight where I can just stand there and whack away at a boss (like, say, Koralon) and ~5k on a fight where I have to run around a lot (like, say, Putricide). I'm DW Frost in both specs, so the difference between tanking and DPS for me is really just a matter of what role I'm playing in the group. The rotations are almost identical, and I enjoy them about the same.

Since leaving my guild a couple weeks ago, I've found that, within my community at least, most raiding groups seem to have well-established tanks, but they need DPS. I've already picked up 3 pieces of T10 tanking gear as well as the Frost emblem cloak and trinket, so I'm pretty darn invested in tanking. I'm almost at 40k unbuffed if I use my Brewfest trinket. But I know, if I put some real effort into it (not into enchants and gems, which I do already have, but into actual upgrades and a few theorycrafting tweaks) I could be really good at DPS. It's a huge decision for me, though, and one I'm really going to have to put a lot of thought into. Tanking has been part of who I am in WoW since Karazhan! But, Heroics aside, it's not what my server needs right now.

(It's also worth taking into account that my favored tanking style is going to be obsolete in a few months. And I also have the warrior I used to tank with, who is only geared for, like, Naxx at the moment but who will have a more level playing field come Cataclysm.)

So there's where I'm at: A tank at heart considering making DPS her main spec, because that seems to be where the most openings are. Blah blah blah.
